I'd like to find some smaller topwater versions of the Smithwick rogue, or Zara Spook, or any "walk the dog" topwater. The ones I see in our local tackle shop are 5"-6". I know I can get tiny poppers and chugs, but what about other topwaters for light-weight or even ultralight applications?

Just look around in the same area of the larger tackle and you should find these smaller versions.

I like the Tiny Torpedos and the Baby Spooks.

The Zara Puppy is a small spook.

On  my last outing things got slow so I took out the UL and cast a little cricket popping lure....I think it's a rebel?

anyway....the little bass and gills were mugging it.......I acutally caught one bass that was 14"  made me put on a chug bug..........no luck.

There are dozens if not hundreds of small topwaters.

First one that comes to mind is the 2" Rapala Skitter Pop.

The Jackall Kana Kana 1.5" would be another.

maybe you should look in the panfish department instead of the bass department. i have two of those little rebel crickets that avid mentioned they are good little baits. you might also want to check in the fly department. there are plenty of little poppers available. you might have trouble casting them though. you could use UL gear with a small bobber a few feet ahead of the lure.

I have one of those little creek chub darters...haven't used it yet though.

I dont use little topwaters meant for panfish, although they do work. Instead when i want a finesse topwater lure I take a soft plastic lure without and weight and twitch it near the top. My favorite technique is to take a 3.5 inch floating tube and twitch it on the top just like a spook.

Don't forget the Original Floating Rapala. There are those who think it's the best topwater bait ever, even if it's not classified as a topwater.

The definition of a "topwater lure" does not limit the angler to HARD plastic.

For a true stealth topwater lure, try T-rigging a Strike King Zulu.

I use an Owner 4/0 - 5180 hook and rig the hook through the thickness of the lure rather than the height of the lure.

Properly rigged, the zulu is a dynamite topwater lure, furthermore it's mouthable and it's weedless.
