another drag question, specific to my reel and not a settings question

Featured Replies

if I crank the drag down on my quantum accurist pt, I am still able to pull line out, although it's harder, it can still be done, but there is resistance. Now, with my spinning reels if I crank them down, the line will snap before the drag lets line out. Why is this? Is something wrong with my reel?

Cranking the drag downs tightens the drag.  Plus, you are probably using lighter line on the spinning reel?  Loosen the drag on the spinning reel and the "problem" will go away.

my question wasn't on the spinning reel, I set that one. I was just stating the huge difference between the two drags. One won't let line out, the other resists but still spins a bit. I've only owned a diawa and quantum and don't remember the daiwas drag much so I have nothing to go off of.

I guess I don't understand your question. Why the difference? The answer is obvious - because they are different reels.

Are you using different line oth both reels?

I can tighten the drag on my spinning reel tight enough to snap 8lb test. But I can't tighten the drag enough on my baitcasters tight enough to snap 17 lb test (I can but I don't want to crank if down that hard.)

Just tighten your drags enough so the line comes off with a little force - a couple of pounds. You don't need max drag pressure to bass fish.

I really think you are overthinking this drag issue. There is nothing wrong with your reels.

Maybe i am. I just didn't know if it would lock down the spool or still peel out line. I didnt even really think about the line size. I can't snap 12lb by hand lol but i can with 8.

If you're mashing the drag down and especially if you're storing it that way, you may have weakened the spring washers. That's not to say that you don't have sufficient drag to land any bass. IMO locking down the drag defeats it's purpose.

It could be that your spinning reel has a stronger drag. All reels are different. Some have multiple discs and plates, some only have  a couple. Any new stock reel should be just fine for it's intended purpose. As Micro stated, if you used the same size line you might be able to pull it off the spinning reel also. If you put light line on the casting reel, it might break at your tightest setting.

Note that the condition of each reels drags may be compromised by wear or by excess lubes (or the wrong lubes) that found their way onto the drag disks.
