Spinnerbait/ buzzbait set-up question (baitcasting)

What line (mono/ fluoro/ copoly/ braid) and what rod "action" should I look for?

I don't intend to make pinpoint casts, more as a searching tool.

Also, on a baitcaster, do you get longer casts with mono (compared to fluouro/braid etc) everything else remaining the same?

My suggestion is an Avid AVC66MF or AVC70MF.

Line = Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12

Monofilament, fluorocarbon and copolymer lines of equal

diameter will all cast about the same.

You should get a MH action rod with a fast tip and you should use a fairly stong mono, such as 17lb.

There are so many variables that it's difficult to make a suggestion without a little more info.

Are you fishing from shore or a boat? What weights are you planning on throwing? Open water or around docks and/or submerged timber?

My setup consists of an older 6'10" MH/MF Quantum Tour Edition PT KVD signature series rod (the one with the full cork grip, not that foam stuff.)

I think it's the PTC6106FKV.

On this rod I have a Curado 200e7, spooled with either 17# XPS fluoro or 12# Sufix Elite mono. Sensitivity is not an issue so mono/fluoro isn't really an issue. I just use whatever I find first when I grab my box of line out from under the bench.

The only thing I'd change about the setup is the Curado. I was going to replace it with a Patriarch XT, but it's apparently not available in a 7:1 ratio. I prefer a reel with a higher ratio and IPT for burning spinnerbaits.

#1. Both from the shore and from my kayak. I'll get a 7' + rod

#2. 3/8 oz and above. Anything less is handled pretty well by my spinning rig. I'll get a MH or H power BC rod.

#3. Mostly open water, grassy and weedy area (light and soft cover). I am really looking to cover water here.

I asked about the line and the rod action because I want to make long casts and get good hooksets at distance at the same time.

I use mono only for both applications. For both I like a fiberglass or composite rod with a slower action. As for the reel, I prefer a slow gear ratio reel for spinnerbaits since I prefer to fish them as deep and as slow as possible most of the time. With buzzbaits, go with at least 6.4:1. Twelve of fourteen pound mono is great all around for buzzbaits and spinnerbaits.

This may be a non-issue for some, but I prefer a shorter handled rod for spinner baits.  I don't know if it is because I have short arms, but when I try to do a roll cast with a long handle it bumps me in the forearm.  Long overhand casts make no difference.

Im using 6'8" MH-XF w/ 14lb mono for that size spinner/buzzbaits out of my kayak in fairly heavy cover (will be going to braid soon).  Im not tryin to throw it a mile though, so you probly want somethin a little longer.

Good luck.

I do too.

I'd use a 7 ft or above MH, fast action rod with something around 20 lb braid instead of mono if you're going to be using it out of a kayak.  The smaller diameter and suppleness will ideally give you longer casts and the lack of stretch makes getting a solid hookset in the yak a little easier.  I'm sure alot of people will disagree with using braid that light on a bc.  I'd also use a fluoro leader at about 12 lb test.   If you get a slower action rod, certainly do the braid to make up for that softness.  In fact, that may be the best combo, braid with a MH moderate rod.  You'll get some more distance out of teh mod action and the braid will solidify the hookset.

J Franco fishes alot out of yaks so he may have some good points here.

Thanks for all the replies.

I played it safe and ordered a 7' MH-F Compre (rated for 3/8 to 1 oz) with a Citica E. Let's see how it goes.

It's also my first BC set-up; I guess I also need to pick up some really cheap line to throw away in backlashes. ;)

Depends on the Spinnerbaits you are regularly chucking.I wouldn't use the same thing for a 1/4 oz spinnerbait as I would for one that was 1oz.
