Blank scrapes

Featured Replies

I was out fishing a couple weeks ago and while fighting in a fish on my spinning rod I scraped it on a bridge.  The scrape has scraped the epoxy a bit and I am pretty sure it has not gotten into the actual blank.  Do you guys think I may eventually have problems with epoxy chipping or anything because of a scrape like this?  It is about 1 inch long and located towards the top fourth of the blank.  Sorry if this question sounds stupid, just curious.

Perhaps others are different then me, but I love a good warranty, and therefore I use my equipment accordingly. Not with reckless abandon, but Im not fragile either. If it breaks warranty it, until then catch as many fish as you can.

Guess I should add that several rods Ive owned explode at that point. I no longer use those rods(loomis). I warrantied em and sold em. Never had to warranty a Powell, nor a Pure Fishing product(that wasnt my fault, rod locker door). Lamiglas exploded and they would not cover it, so I bought no more. Im funny that way.

    What brand rod is it?

Daiwa Fuego

I have not owned one of those. But if its anything like the old Team Diawa rods I dont think you have anything to worry about.

I had a similar scrape on a heavy, jig rod.  I fished it for a year before it actually snapped in two.  You never know...

if the blank itself is okay, don't worry about it. i even have a few rods with gouges into the blank that i keep expecting to snap but they just keep humming along. i have snapped two rods while fishing in my lifetime but both were in absolutely perfect condition. you just never know...

I'd say call up Daiwa and see what they can do.

I personally am very careful with my rods, I once bought a St.Croix Premier and upon getting in the car noticed basically the same type of scrape you did. I walked right into BPS and got a Crucial instead (They didn't have the same Premier)

Once a graphite blank is compromised, the rate of failure increases dramatically. Exactly when or if it will actually fail is any one's guess. Go ahead and fish it keeping in mind normal rod handling such as avoiding "High Sticking" or anything else that flexes the rod tip beyond 90* to the blank and hope for the best.

am i the only one here that read that he scratched the epoxy and not the blank? i can't believe all this doom and gloom over a scratch on the epoxy!
