Flippin switch

Featured Replies

Ive never fished a reel with a flippin switch.Im gettin ready to pick up an Abu Garcia Black Max combo with the flippin switch.

How does one use this switch to their advantage?

It seems to me like a flippin' switch would be good for flippin'.

Sorry, had to. I've never used one before.

I've only owned one reel with a flipping switch and that was a Daiwa Procaster Rojo.

IIRC, it kept the thumb bar from locking in the down postion. So, as soon as you remove your thumb from the bar, the spool would stop spinning.

x2!!

If you want to go with a reel with a flippin switch, I would pick up a Daiwa Viento.. on sale at *** for 89 bucks..  I think you could get a lot more reel with that than a black max..

The above mentioned Daiwa has a twitching bar, not a flipping switch. If you want a reel with a flipping switch skip that POS Black Max, and go to ebay and get the previous generation Quantum Accurist PT. They can be had NIB all from many differat sellers for arounf $50 and are 10 times the reel that the Abu max's are. They sold new 2-3 years ago for $130, I have several that are any where from 3-5 years old and still work like new. For pure flipping you cant beat it, all it needs to do is hold line, lock the drag down tight and it's a tank.

ww2farmer, you beat me to it! I can't speak for the Black Max, but I do agree with you about the Quantum Accurist PT. I had a couple of those for a few years, and they were great reels for the price. I handed them down, and they're still in use.

According to the product descriptions...Its a Flipping switch. So what is it? A Twitchin Bar or Flippin Switch?

The Black Max does have a flippin' switch. The Diawa Viento that JimmyMo3287 recommended has a twitchin' bar.

Ok I got it,I misread and misunderstood. Thanks for clarifying.

my mistake.. I just assumed a flippin switch and a twitchin bar were the same thing..  In my opinion they're both just one more thing that can go wrong on a reel..

I'll Third that motion !  I still have 4 ACS500PT reels.  They have been excellent performers. The flippin switch feature actually works on this reel but I hated the feature personally and never used it.  Great reels though.

A flippin switch is really not very useful for true flippin.

OTOH,  it works really well for pitchin.  Most switches engage the reel once the thumb is taken off the thumbar without the need to turn the handle.  In Shimano's case, their Instagage switch system on the Castaic reel engages the reel when the switch is pushed.

You either like the feature or don't.  I've used reels with flippin switches for years and love them for pitching.

I looked at the Shimano Castaic for years wondering whether I would like it or not. Bought one at a flea market. Now I own three. (I didn't need three, just couldn't resist) I like them a lot for pitching. I use the 201 to save the effort of switching hands.

I'm also gonna have to give a nod to the last gen Quantum Accurist PT 501, which is what I have. As someone mentioned they can be had on ebay NIB for less than $50 and are tanks. Mine is going on 3 yrs old as well without a problem

My old Abu XLT Plus reels have flipping switch, must have used it 10 or 20 times in maybe 20 years, that 's how necessary a flipping switch is and in my everyday lake flipping is one of my most used fishing techniques.

I have 2 quantum accurists, 1 is pt and the other is the 2. I like them pretty well but I just don't use the flipping switch. As a matter of fact, my quantum accurist isn't performing all that well after using it for 2-3 years, but I think it just needs a good cleaning. My favorite type of flipping switch is the one on the cabelas tournament zx reels. It's a button that just locks the spool back so you don't have to use the other hand. I love the concept, but I hate the reel itself. I don't think the newer ones have the flipping switch/button on them though. Anyone know of another reel that has this type of flipping switch?
