deep jerkbait

Featured Replies

Anybody have a favorite jerkbait that gets 9-10 ft deep reliably?

I tried the Deep X-rap and wasn't very impressed.  I found it really only gets at most 6-7 ft deep even using a thin superline.

is that a suspending bait? you could try suspend dots or florocarbon line with its sinking characteristic.

Or find a sinking jerk bait.

correct me if I am wrong but saltwater has more boyancy so would float a heavier bait easier... maybe a suspending saltwater bait would get you down there.

"Suspends perfectly at 5 to 7 feet deep. "  -- I've already got baits that do that, .  I'm looking for one that goes close to 10 ft.  I've heard the Megabass Deep-X 200T gets down there, but I'm hoping for less expensive alternatives (although I'll spend it if I have to).

It will suspend deeper with thinner diameter line. Yo-Zuri Hybrid #6 is 11.9 lb test and works VERY well getting a variety of lures deeper.

8-)

I've tried line thinner than that Yozuri 6 lb (heck, its an 8 lb diameter line).

Are you sure you aren't thinking about the Staysee, and not the Stacey King?  It is advertised as 8-10 ft, but alas it gets about the same depth as the Deep X-rap with casting any reasonable strength line.

I have had success with the Rapala "Down Deep" Husky Jerk.  Use it on spinning gear with 6lb. co-poly and it gets pretty deep.  With that being said, for some reason I am not a big fan of hard jerkbaits  that deep. I have had better success with a weighted hook/fluke setup.

Megabass Deep-X 200's can easily be found for between $12-$15 from eBay retailers (I've gottent them as cheap as $10).   You can get them into the low teens on a long cast (and a long cast is VERY easy with these).    I've never really thought of them as a deep jerkbait though - - it's pretty much a straight-up crankbait.

Thanks for all the ideas guys.

It is funny they advertise the deep x-raps as 6-13 ft.  Rapalas website says 5-10 ft.  I even threw mine on 8 lb braid and couldn't get it to bump bottom on a 7-8 ft rock pile.  Maybe they include "trolling depths" in their ratings.

I may have to hunt down one of those Super DD Squirrels.

Anybody used this, claims to get 9-12 ft on 12 lb. line :

I tend to agree with you, once I find the fish.  Drop shotting a fluke has been a good producer too.

But for searching I'd like a deeper diving option for when those smallies want something that suspends in a long profile, but don't want to come up off the bottom more than a foot or so.

Yes, the Deep X-200 is a straight up crank but there is the Deep X-201 which suspends.   http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=megabass+deep+x201&category0=

$25???   I think I'll just put some SuspenDots on my regular Deep X 200's - they're not very buoyant anyway.   :)

Ask Big M from the tackle making section. He can make ANYTHING you could ever want.
