GStrider Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I know a lot of you on this great forum have been out bass fishing many times and good for you. Every story I read about you guys catching bass has made me a little envious but, the MN opener is tomorrow so I am like a kid at Christmas. I get to finally enjoy what God gave me a passion for and that is fishing for bass. Wish me safety and a good time. Thanks Quote

Up until 2 years ago MI was the same way, at least we have a C+R season that opened April 30. Best of luck, and tight lines. Quote
ring fry Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Probably a dumb question, but WHY is there a season? Quote
formulagamble Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Good luck!...and be safe.....let us know how things went. Quote
JCrzy4Bass Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 I knew parts of Canada had a season... was unaware that MN had one too. Is it the whole state or just parts of it? When does the season come to an end? I don't understand how they enforce those regulations either. Whose to say if you're using a deep diving crank you're not fishing for muskie or pike or something? Same thing with a Mepps. How do they control that and do people really get in trouble for fishing out of season or are lakes just blocked off and such? What's the deal? Anyway, glad you get to get out and do what you love man. There's no better feeling than being on the water and more so, feeling a bass tug on the end of your line. Quote
MNGeorge Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 The reason for the closed season is to protect the Bass during the spawn. Most years, by Memorial Day Bass Opener, the Bass have completed their spawning. As for how it is enforced, so long as you are not obviously fishing Bass on the beds, you usually will not get any attention from the DNR. The open season runs until the end of February for Largemouth. For Smallmouth, open season runs until early September, then it becomes C&R only until the end of February. Quote
GStrider Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 JCrzy, Like MNGoerge said the season is to protect bass during the spawn. With the long cool spring we have had here we will get to fish the spawn this year. No, lakes are not shut off, the walleye opener was two weeks ago. I am all for protecting the bass resource we have in MN, but I do wish they would allow C+R before now. Quote
Daiwa Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Probably a dumb question, but WHY is there a season? Spawning I'm going to fish Ham Lake for some nice 5lbers. Quote
Daiwa Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Wooooooo!!! Come on ABC, this is what we have been waiting for!!!!! I'm cleaning the boat out for some night fishing! Quote
GStrider Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 Successful MN bass opener despite 30mph winds. Caught 4 fish with the biggest being a 19in. Boat control was near impossible today and could not fish some of my favorite spots because of the wind, but had a fun day. Just thankful I can finally fish for those bass. Quote
