Texas fishing this winter?

Featured Replies

How's Texas in the winter? I am thinking of coming down from the Midwest this winter to fish. How far south would I have to go to get into some good wintertime action? Where do you recommend?

Thanks

Rand

Well if you want to fish falcon or choke, you'll be real far south.  There are some fun power plant lake options also.  So if you are driving, you can make day stops along the way.

Hey Flechero what part of the state are the power plant lakes? What are they named?

You can get some spawners on Falcon in late Dec and Jan if the winter stays mild like it has the past few years down south.

Tom Redington has some great posts on Fork in the winter.

There is some great power plant fishing not far from Fork.

Monticello, Bob Sandlin, Welsh, and Cypress Springs are 1 lake with 3 dams.

About 15,000 acres total for the 4 lakes. Alot of the guides on Fork work these lakes in the winter for numbers.   Lotta locals from Fork hit those lakes for the spawn and numbers.    Some Toads come from them, Monticello, at one time was the State record home.

Big bass in any one of those, and beds will show up end of Dec. I believe.

Late December through mid February is my favorite time to be on any Texas lake ;)

Isn't  Tom Redington a guide on Fork?

Yes, he is, he is also a successful FLW stren angler who qualified for the next level last year, I think it was his first year on the Stren series as well.

But he has some excellant reports and articles on his website and from his posts on the forum.

Sorry for the delay, I forgot about this thread.  They are all over, kind of.  I bet there is one within a 2 hour's drive of most places in the state.

I'm sure there are more but here's a list to get you started...

fairfield, tradinghouse (sometimes), bastrop, fayette county, coleto creek, brauning, calaveras, welsh, monticello, martin creek, brady branch, gramham, decker, gibbons creek

I wouldn't make these a replacement for a Falcon trip, just a place (depending on your route) to stop and "stretch your legs" on the drive down!   ;)

If you are heading down to choke and want a little power plant fishing then you should hit up Calaveras or Braunig lake south side san antonio. Its state park, but there is not much action on the shore its on open water where the magic happens you can catch cats, bass, and some reds =) good luck wherever you go.

Martin creek is good power plant lake where some fish starting to make beds already.  There is a state park thereand in the state parks you only pay 3.00 and don't need a fishing license no matter what state you are from.  We have several state park lakes within an hour of Tyler, tx one the Tyler State Park will be stocked with rainbow trout around Dec 18.
