flukes

Featured Replies

How does everyone like to fish flukes? How do you rig them and how do you like to present them?

I usually fish them with just a simple wide gap hook and fluorocarbon line. I just twitch them back and let them sink slowly every now and then. Come this spring though I am going to try them on the "Donkey" rig.

carolina rigged around timber or rocks

I have also heard that they are good carolina rigged in current. Peter T catches a lot that way. I will give that a try come spring too.

Its a new rig where you take two flukes and rig them in a way that makes them both dart around and sometimes chase each other. Here is how to rig it:

Mark Menendez popularized it when he caught a bunch of big fish using this rig and two strike king z toos. Haven't tried it but I cant wait to give it a shot.

Mark cracks me up. That rig has been fished for years in my part of the country.

Anyway, to answer your question. There are many ways to rig a Fluke.

I prefer a 4/0 offset, round bend hook.

Rigs:

weedless

Texas rig

Carolina Rig

Dropshot

Double Fluke Rig (The real name of Mark's discovery) :;)

Wacky

Trailer on a spinnerbait, or Chatterbait

Use a weighted hook to get it down but keep it vertical

it depends for me. if fish are shallow, i rig them weightless and twitch them back just below the water. if they are a little deeper, i put a split shot about 3 inches above the hook and jerk or drag it back. sometimes i carolina rig it with succes, but usually just the split shot rig. i use the smaller sizes for dropshot too

weedless and weightless, fished like a jerkbait.

Exactly

4/0 wide gap hook when the bass are chasing shad throw it out there give it a few twitches and you will get bit.

lately i have been dead stickin them. throw them behind the pads and just let them drop. twitch twitch drop.

I have only fished it with simply a wide gap hook, no weight. Works great, great action. Work it just like a jerkbait. Two or three jerk cadence, let it sit 5-15 seconds (if colder pause longer) and repeat.

Tx Rigged on a 3/0 EWG red Gammy. I always add a nail style weight to the fluke to keep the bait down a bit. Without the nail, it seems to dart out of the water head first too much.

I'm never quite sure how fast to jerk them.  Do you just give it a twitch or a serious jerk?   How far do you jerk them?  Haven't found a comfort level with these yet.
