What Size Worms?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been fishing with the standard Senko's and *** for this past summer and i started thinking, what about an 8-10" worm up here in the northeast?  I have heard of guys in the south using them with success, i was just wondering if anyone in the northeast uses them with success as well?

Do they generally result in larger fish? More or less action??

Thanks

My standard Texas rigged worm is a 10" Powerworm.  They work just fine in the northeast.  You might catch a few more small fish if you use 7" worms but that big Largemouth isn't going to turn down a bigger worm for a smaller one most days.

I have been using 8" senkos for 2 years and if the smallies are in that mood they like them.

I wacky rig em with a 3/0 wige gap hook and wait a few seconds before setting the hook.

The fish are no bigger, it just weeds out the 6" fish. I've caught 1lb bass on it. I don't use them often but they do work and you can cast them a mile.

10 inch power worms are one of my go to baits for a kicker bass during a tournament...  either texas rigged weightless or with a 1/8 oz weight or carolina rigged with a big 1/2 oz weight... both setups are excellent depending on the water you are fishing and current structure.

Big senko's are nice as well, however many times the hook set is a problem.

I do notice that I wont catch as many fish but the ones I catch most times are larger. I guess Im stating the obvious. For me it has to be the right time or the bigger worms just wont work. When I say right time I mean not before or right after a cold front etc. I too like the 10 inch Power Bait Power Worm. My personel color preference is the Mardi Gras color or black. I like them Texas and carolina rigged. I seem to have the best luck slowly dragging them across the bottom rather than lifting the rod tip and dropping but again thats just a personel preference. Good luck.
