PROVIDENCERhode Island will receive more than $6 million to help preserve the state's fish and wildlife populations.

The federal fundsmore than $4 million from a sport fish restoration program and about $2 million from a wildlife restoration programwill go to the state's Department of Environmental Management.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., announced the grants on Wednesday.

The DEM can use the money to pay for stocking fish, aquatic and wildlife research, buying and improving habitats, fishing and hunting educational programs, and construction at BOAT RAMPS, fishing piers and shooting ranges.

We'll see...we'll see!!!!!

A shooting range in Northern RI would be nice too.

No not ramps just...just keeping them maintained. The ones we have were probably put in around 1960!!!

They'll probably blow it all on non-native stocker trout and say "habitat-restore-what?"  

or maybe they will stock Pike in a great bass lake like they do in CT as a Management technique  > :'(

Just so you all know our congressmen in office now HAD NOTHING to do with this grant. These are the Pittman Robertson Act funds that the state receives every year since the 1970's from the federal excise taxes you pay when you buy hunting and fishing gear.

It just burns me up to see someone trying to take credit for something they had nothing to do with. Jack Reed was still pedaling his bicycle when the grant became federal law.
