Smallmouth from Beltzville State Park, PA

Featured Replies

Just caught this guy on Saturday. Bad weather day but I caught him and the striper both on white spinner baits in about 3-5 ft of water near a steep drop off. Both of them were caught within 30 minutes of each other in between two big storms.

Smallmouth was 4 lbs 13 ozs, I think that is pretty good for PA. The striper wasn't big but it is the only one I ever caught so he's in it. This is the first time I have done anything good whatsoever at Beltzville.

Nice smallie and striper! Congrats!

Your smallmouth is beautiful, but you should have released the striper before taking the pic...

That dude is pitiful!

8-)

Nice smallie. I am getting mad that I don't know that exact spot. I live next to the lake and fish it a ton! My best guess is in the Pine Run cove near the launch.

The picture was taken a little later and the background is not the area where I caught them. When I say under the power lines I mean out in the big section of the lake, where the huge towers of power lines are, you can hear them buzzing. We were fishing on that sandy shelf that is 3-6 ft deep and then it drops off to like 60-80 out near the middle.

We didn't take pictures at first because it was pouring and didn't want to get my digital camera wet so we kept them in the livewell for an hour or so and then let them both go. Maybe she'll be the state record in five years.

I have never caught a smallmouth at that spot surprisingly. That is a community spot though, but a pain to stay on if the wind picks up. Nice fall/wintering spot.

Is your avatar picture with that huge largemouth from Beltzville?

Yes it was caught in Beltzville. Beltzville is a tough lake, but it can cough up some great fish. It was a windy day and the scale was moving as low as 6.5 and as high as 7. I just call it 6.5lbs. It was caught in season in the spring.

Great markings on that smallie. RW is right about the striper but he does make the smallmouth look even bigger by comparison!

zdunham, that Smallie is a beauty.

I haven't been out since spring due to shoulder problems (Haven't even put a hitch on the SUV). Wish I could get to Beltzville one more time before the hard water comes. Now is the time for jigging spoons and drop shots for the big Smallies (and the shoulder could handle vertical fishing), but alas no way to get the boat there. :'(
