yea i agree with Bass fiishing Machine but i read the day on the lake with dean rojas in BM magazine in the dead of winter and stated that bass will sometimes school up a bunch of fish and will sometimes hit topwater frogs

I usually fish them once it gets warm and the fish are in the lilypads and slop.  Toads are a great summer bait for me.

I limit my use of horny toads to a alternate lure for frogin'. So I wait until the mats, lily pads, or weeds are there.  Topwater lures for me are 8 out of 10 times a Super Spook jr, followed by a Popper, then every once in a while a Cavitron Buzzbait.

55-60* water isn't too cold for top water in New England, don't know about Tennessee though.

of course dean rojas is always selling us those ten dollar frogs.

I'll bet the water temp is 55-60 on our 55 ac lake and the Horny Toad is killing them.

I'm a huge fan of the Horny Toad. I let the fish tell me when. Try it and see. I have been on a mat, slop or lilly pads during what you would think to be prime time and not got a bite. Then on the other hand, I went over to the local pond during a cold and windy morning to try out a new Horny Toad style bait and crushed them.

You are a bit south of me but, no it's not time yet.  ;)

70 would be the coldest I would have a topwater tied on UNLESS you are fishing shallow prespawn males in the 5-6 days where they are physically digging beds. If you find em in 1-2' they'll crush a buzz but they aren't going to be impressive size wise.

I've caught frof fish on Guntersville in March, so it's not too early if the fish are in the shallow grass.

One way to find out, fish it.

I usually have one tied on when the water hits 60 degrees and never take it off till October. They are one of my favorite baits to fish. Behind a senko and football jig.
