Do ya'll fish Rat L Traps in the weeds?

Featured Replies

I have three: pink/chrome, yellow/chrome and a small blue/chrome I bought last summer.

The pink and yellow were bought for speckled trout and I've not fished the blue much at all.

This morning they were not hitting the chart buzzbait so I decided to fish the yellow and chrome because chartreuse seems to be the color right now. I was paralleling a weedline along the bank and I gave up. It didn't matter if I was 1' or 10' away I was still pulling back a mess of grass and crap.

I bet the Trap would be great on Amistad but I don't see how I can be productive if I have to clean it each cast.

Will the bass hit them with a hunk of vegetation hanging on it?

Yes, lipless cranks are great in the grass.

Fish it one of two ways.  Barely ticking the grass or let it get in the grass and rip it free.

I think what Burley is trying to say is  "hell yeah!"

I love traps in the grass, problem is there isn't that much grass around here.

In the past few years there has really been a resurgence of grass on Ky Lake and yea its a great way to fish the grass.

If the weeds are more than a couple feet below the surface, burning a trap over them can draw them out for an arm jolting strike.

Lewis does sell a floating version of the trap.  I've got several of them.  They float at rest and dive about 1-2 feet on retrieve.  You can add suspend dots or strips to them and make them suspend.

There, I just gave away a little secret of mine.   :(

Not really if there is weeds hanging on the hooks but if you feel the rat-l-trap get hung just rip it out with a quick jerk motion.  The best places for a trap are along weed edges and over submerged weed beds.

I have no problem with Rat L Traps in weeds. I'll just switch out the trebles with a EWG worm hook.

:( 8-)

Tick . . . Tick . . . . Tick . . . Tick.

Ticking the tops of grass, you can rip it free when you feel it tick the vegetation.  Let the lure get down in the grass and you'll bring back vegetation every time.   :(

Are you actually trying to be that obtuse?

This pretty much covers it!

I have never had a bass hit one of my lures with weeds on it so i try to keep my shallow cranks just above the underwater crap or go topwater.

Just ask KVD he was fishing in the grass down in florida last week on bassmasters with a rattla trap and he won 100gs ;D

I have no doubt it's a great lure and even a 100G money maker. But was he pulling grass off the hooks every cast?

If your having this problem use one of the Rapala Floating Rattle Traps, much better for shallow water conditions. Or use a smaller version of the Rat L Trap so it doesn't sink so fast. You should be able to burn it right over top once you figure out the depth.

Pulling the grass off is just part of the game. If you have a fast action reel and really get that ripping action the grass on your hooks should be minimal. It's worth it when that hog slams your lure.  You can also downsize your hooks, but I wouldn't go too far.

This is one of the greatest big fish tools in bass fishing.

Burn it and snap it out, or YO-YO it.
