good day at fountainhead

Featured Replies

Went out w/ a buddy this afternoon. Had a good day. It was nice to see the water temps back to normal. Water line even looked a little higher as well. Water was very clear with temps around 84*. We had a bunch of keepers w/ our best six around 18 lbs.

You will love them. Best jigs I have ever used.

Awesome!  I've been out of town for a couple weeks and was wondering what I'd find on the fishin' front when I got back.  Looks promising!  (I spent some time fishing for stripers during the vacation, but that was a bust. :()

I was out on Monday and Tuesday.  I know I saw you guys one of those days.  To put it mildly, we did really well, too.  And I'll leave it at that.

anyways congrats, those are some nice fish. and that cat is huge, what do you think it weighed/?

yes, that's our buddy thai.

ahhhhhhhhhh so jealous! very nice work out there guys!

I too went out on Fountain head on Firday.... got on the water about 8am.  Caught 5, two on jigs, two on Spinners in deeper water, and one on a tiny torpedo.

The top two were 3lbs and 2.5 lbs.  I had pictures but after seeing that Flathead.... well everything would look small besides that.

Heck of a catch...... have to ask..... what test line was that caught on?  No matter the answer, beyond impressive.

10lb.

What type of jigs are those? Nice fish too! Looks like the big one was laying in the Tree? INside near trunk or outside in branches near deeper water?

Grats on the fish! I am new to the forums,  state, and fresh water fishing.  I have been to fountainhead twice but only had a few bites. I can use some help. I have a canoe, what direction should I paddle off? Are you guys fishing off points, deep waters, or both?

Thanks! Welcome to the boards and state. We have a great showing on this forum. To the left is down lake and the right is up river. Both can be great and both can be humbling. I suggest getting a map at fountainhead or online. That's a great place to start.

Ant welcome.  As a fellow newbie at fountainhead (only a handful of trips) I have barely explored it.  I have always gone left and have never made it down to the dam.  With that being said, it seems that working any of the points, any of the literally hundred of tress down in the water, or marking any of the drops offs from shallow to deeper water .... seems to produce.  the best is if the point your working seems to not be working, just head for the nearest downed tree or overhang.

Last Friday was right after a really bad storm, and I pulled a 2lb-er out of a tree that had obviously fallen not 24 hours earlier in the storm.  Got it on a jig-with rage chunk (coffee scent).  Just a lot of options in terms of approach.

Ty Soccer and big. I am heading back out Friday. I never used a jig; I been reading the info from the forums and my brain hurts. I will give jigging a try but may have to convert to rubber worms and crank bait. How do those baits work out in fountainhead?

I am not a big jig fisherman either and have always been a texas rigged worm guy.  I used to always treat them as rather interchangeable.  Used to being the key word.  I think a jig and good trailer can really make a difference when fishing structure, especially stuff like the trees in the water at fountainhead.  Think the bigger profile and slower fall makes a difference.

I would think (depending on how many poles you use) that it might be a really good idea to use both on your trip.  Flip one in for a few casts, then switch over.

I did not throw a texas worm last friday, which very well could have been a mistake.  I can tell you the two I did catch on jigs, the hook sets were deep.... so they really gobbled em up.

I also barely threw a crank, having been concentrating on using spinners and carolina rigs for my "search" baits where I usually use a crank.  I do not know the submerged weeds there good enough to know where to run a crank (I am also without electronics).  I am sure though if they are interested that day and all this heat is not making them too lethargic, that a crank would do just fine.

(P.S.- willing to take any and all suggestions on carolina rigging.... been a total failure for me this summer.)
