This really stinks.  >:(

Went to Coyote for the afternoon with a buddy, only to find the lake closed til the 23rd.  All lakes in the county are closed as well.

What the hell does this solve?  the lakes will be reopened on the 23rd and an additional $7 charge will be made to inspect your boat.

Sorry to hear that. Makes no sense to me. Why can't they just do the inspection without closing the lake? All Politics.

Man, it's getttin bad down south.  It's only time before it happens here up north.

This may sound like a broken record, but what the he!! is closing down a lake gonna do, especially for a couple weeks.  They have already said that animals pose a greater risk of bringing in the mussel than boats do.  This just get's my blood flowin.  Keep us informed.

My point exactly.  Closing it for two weeks does NOTHING.  Other than aggravate me to no end!  AAARGHH!

actually what it does do is give the local ranger and biologist time to access the situation at your local bodies of water im sure theyll be trying to come up with a scientific solution to the mussell issue its either that or the bass in the lake will eventually suffer i would take the time off to study or even just relax the bass will be there on the 23rd and maybe also be more aggressive due to the calming of stuff thrown theyre way but you are exactly right the animals are alot more like to contribute to the issue but that is only true if they travel from one body of water to the next as in migratory patterns just my .02

That's one way to look at it, but Santa Clara officials have had more than enough time to figure out a method to control the mussles.  I don't know how long they have  been here, but other lakes have had methods in effect for months and months already.  Seems like santa clara has been kickin back relaxing while they should of been thinking of a better way to go about this situation other than closing all lakes.  I hate to say it, but I bet you they won't have anything by the 23rd.  It'll probably take longer

Nothing worse than water utility goons who act like dictators and further turn our great nation into a nanny state.

its either that or the bass in the lake will eventually suffer
.

Bass in the lake are not going to suffer from the mussels.  The only thing that will suffer are the water pipes and fishing line.  I like your optimism about the "authorities" trying to develop a scientific approach but in California that is not the case.  The parks are run by wack jobs that don't know quagga mussels from pea gravel.  They don't know how to handle a problem so they just shut things down.  We have been going through this ordeal all year long and it is getting really old.  Just my 2cents.

Sorry to hear about Coyote.  They had Stevens Creek closed when I was there in May but I think that was for mercury or something like that.  At least you still have lake "X" right?

Ops, I just realized how old this post was.  How are things up there now?

Many sources claim Zebra and Quaggas have HELPED fisheries!

Depends on the fishery.

Thing is, birds and animals are spreading them.  Nothing can be done, really, to stop it.  So what happens once all the lakes are "infected"?  Close them all?

Right on the money Glenn. It isn't even proven they would harm a fishery, and some evidence suggests they enhance fisheries. I hope we can get these utility guys knocked down off their power trips.

they aren't doing it because of the fish...Most of those lakes are California drinking water. There don't want the mussels to grow around the outlets and block waterflow. I know at casitas your boat has to be completely dry, then they inspect it and seal it...then you have to wait like 3 days before you can launch your boat...A little crazy if you ask me but i understand the reason.
