I got a deer!!!! 10/27/07

Featured Replies

I have just got back from camping the weekend at our lease for the TN juvenile deer hunt. Yesterday morning my dad and I got into our buddy stand set up about 20 yards off a 40 acre soybean field. We got in the stand about 6:00 AM. There are several small thickets in this particular field and we were in clear site of one. There has been lots of rain in this area over the past couple of days and there is a pool of water about 3 feet deep that covers the whole back side of the thicket. About 7:00 o'clock we here something crash into the water. Its quiet for a minute or two and then a small buck steps out of the thicket. I get my 30/06 from my dad and rest the barrel on the gun rest that surrounds the stand. I click the safety of and he presents me with a great 60yd broadside shot. I shot a little high but he went straight down. It ended up that the few minutes we didnt hear or see any thing he was making a rub that we saw once we went down by the thicket. He ended up being a small 5 point. This is my 2nd deer, I killed a 3 point in '05.

Nice deer man!  My family has 250 acres up in North Central AR.  Already been hunting up there 5-6 times this year, but we've only seen does.  Waiting for the first buck of the year...

Congrats!

Did you field dress him or did Dad do it?

Dad did. I almost threw up on my first deer but I guess I'll have to get over it.

Actually we are gonna donate most of the meat to the Hunters for the Hungry organization.

Cool man, Congrats. You can't beat that rush.

I am in the middle of turning a buck I shot on Thursday into jerky. He wasn't much in the way of antlers but he was big when he came out at 15yards and I was sitting on the ground. I'm making jerky because I spoiled my wife last year with three young, good tasting, does.

If you wish to continue to enjoy deer hunting then get your hands in there and field dress it yourself and learn how to use all the meat from the animal. There is much more to deer hunting than the hunt.

Congratulations!!

Very nice gesture, giving the meat to those who need it.

Yeah, it'll be good training for when you have kids and have to change that first poopy diaper.   :D

Yes Burley, It can be a pretty gruesome sight so some people, as well has having a stench that can knock you off your feet (particularly on a paunch shot)

You could have came up with better reply... such has "Nice Deer!" or you could have said nothing at all...

Hey fluke, how hard is it to make jerky?

Really? Every deer I've ever killed smelled like roses. ::)

And this is simply a bouquet for my wife...

Kid did good.  At least he had someone to gut it for him.  I was 14 when I killed my first, you should have seen the hack job I did on that one.  Never had anyone gut a deer for me.  Hell, I make money at camp gutting them for everyone else.

Dont feel bad about the almost puking deal.  Some dont have the stomach for it.  I have to field dress my buddies deer because he cant.  I've seen what happens to him.    After cleaning a few it doesnt take long at all with a good knife.  5 min at the most.

Awsome deer dude. Really cool.

Dang Burley.  Where are you hunting at man?

Congrats!!! Nice deer.

Dont worry, a few more deer under your belt and you'll be a pro at field dressing ;)
