I'm gun shy about leaving stuff onine and having cookies open all of the time

Wonder if anyone else does this?

Cookies are harmless. The "fear" is a product of the opportunistic media to prey upon the common lack of knowledge and understanding people have regarding computers and the Internet. The majority of the what the media "reports" regarding the Internet is all hype and fluff designed to scare you enough to get you to watch them so they can sell advertising at a higher rate.

Plain and simple: Cookies do NOT steal your identity. Cookies are not "opened" or "closed". They're merely a line or two of text that allows a website to: log you in; remember your viewing preferences; present information, headlines, articles, etc. that is relevant to you; keep you from seeing the same ad over and over again (or from seeing ads that you don't care about); or tracking your usage of a website in order to improve the site. There's more, but in essence, they're used to give you a better experience online. There's nothing malicious about them, contrary to what the media wants you to believe.

Remember, the media preys upon the fear of the unknown. That's their bread-n-butter.

I just hate it when they try to make out the Internet as something evil and dangerous.

How about the double chocolate chip ones?   Thanks for the info.  I'm clueless when it comes to computers.

GLENN HAS HELPED ME TRHOUGH MORE THEN ONE COMPUTER ISSUE AND HE IS RIGHT WE ARE SCARED OVER THINGS THAT DON'T MAKE SENSE SOMETIMES 8-)

Yo Muddy, Glenn won't be deleting any more of our posts!!!!  

 Not sure if I ever heard it or not so not sure if the media generated any mis-info for me. I always "envisioned" that "tracking" cookie meant one retailer could "track" what other websites you go to.

Just my personal preference but none of any sites business ( if even possible) to know what web-page I go to next. EX. When I go to my Al Qaida support group web- site ( just kidding on this ) after filing my tax return I don't want government or anyone else to be able to "track" where I go ( don't even know if even possible for them to do that, sure they could find a way anyway ).

If I wanted to visit a risque site ( which I'm not saying I do! LOL) after Cabelas then none of their business ( hypothetical siuation only of course! )

As part of my spyware package it recommends deleting cookies so I have it do it once or twice a week. Just like to keep my machine clean as it gets slow once in a while and fig'd it doesn't hurt to "clean" it.
