Crazy Hunting Question

Featured Replies

Ok, this may sound crazy depending on who reads this. I was watching a movie the other day, and at one point these three kids were out hunting deer because they were driven out of their town and had to get food some how. Anyway, this kid shot the deer, and being his first kill, the other two guys encouraged him to drink the deers blood out of one of those tin cantene cups. They said now he's a "real" hunter.

Now this may sound inhumane to someone, but so is blasting a deer in the lungs with a rifle... :o

I know it was a movie, but I got to thinking, does that sort of stuff go on during hunts. I have never been hunting, but though of taking it up, just to keep the beast alive so to speak, and I'm sure that's why others do it as well. To tell you the truth though, I am kind of conflicted about it (to kill :-/ or not to kill)since hunting really isn't a recreational activity around my parts. Anyway, I may be over imaginative thinking that a hunter would drink a deers blood, but just wanted to inquire about it. And if you have or know of someone who has, and don;t want to post it on the forum, just MP me and I'll keep it private.

I hope people don;t think I'm some sort of sick freak now for asking this, cuz I'm really just a normal person wondering about a crazy thing I saw. But I would have to say it seemed pretty bad *** to take a sip of blood from the deer you just took...

To each his own, I guess.

There are different traditions and jokes that go on in just about every deer camp.

A lot of times, the older guys will tell a first time hunter some crazy things they must do after killing their first deer and then stop them just short of completing the task.

I was on the receiving end of one of these jokes.  The guy who was showing me the proper way to gut a deer waited until we were all done and then said, "Ok, get your head in there" as he was pointing to the cavity where the deer's entrails had been.  Me, being a young dumb arse, thought...."Hey, this must be part of the ritual of hunting!!!"  Well, when I got near the deer, I received a boot in the backside that shoved me right in there.....face first!!!

I can still hear him laughing about that today.  Luckily, it didnt turn me off to hunting.

I can imagine that you would have to judge a young hunter's character pretty closely to see how they would react.

Take up hunting.  But be warned....

The Bow Monkey is a force to be reckoned with.

The movie you watched was Red Dawn and I don't think any hunter in his or her right mind would do this if they had any clue about pathogens that can be transmitted through blood.  But, you never know?  ::)

I used to love hunting, but I have tapered off. I figured out why I like bass fishing soo much and dont want to hunt anymore. I HATE CLEANING GAME, LOL!

Hunting is alot of fun and can be very rewarding. As long as you employ some common sense ethics, you will probably enjoy it!

I wouldn't beleave anything that come's from Hollywood. I haven't heard of anyone doing it but there are some morons out there. I say give it a try and if you don't like it stick to fishing. Try hunting different game though. You might not like deer hunting for your first hunting experiance  but might like turkey hunting. I like rabbit hunting and turkey but I'm not much on deer hunting.

#1 You need a mentor or close friend that is ALREADY a hunter to work with you.

#2 A Hunter's Safety course is MANDATORY.

#3 Go to a range and become VERY familiar with your weapon before ever considering a trip into the field.

#4 I think you should start with a few small game outings. I would recommend bird hunting which is easier to learn and in my opinion, safer.

Tell that to Dick Cheney's lawyer buddy! ;D

d**n I love Red Dawn.

I know it was a movie, but I got to thinking, does that sort of stuff go on during hunts.

A real Captain eats his first Giant Bluefin Tuna's heart.  It's the way of the sea.  Eat the heart.

There are many ceremonial practices in multiple cultures all over the world that pertain to the eating, drinking, or sharing of certain parts of the kill after a successful hunt.  It is not seen as gross or hard core, it is more of a homage to the soul of the animal or the gods they believe brought that meal to them.

Don't worry we are not in New Zealand. You do not have to worry about any one making you do anything to horrible to the deer if you know what I mean  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hookemdown, look at your post and your avatar and tell me if you see anything ironic.  I had to do a double take.  ;)

Surely you don't believe everything you see in movies?!  Or whatever comes out of a politicians or lawyers mouth? ;)

I know a few guys who drank the blood of their first deer.  Myself personally I took a bite of the heart of the deer right out of his chest.  It was part of an old indian rite designed to put the deer's spirit into the person to make them a better hunter and honor the deer for dying to feed the hunters family.  It was my fathers idea but I am sure he did not think I would go through with it.
