PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING: RECESSION IS HERE

Featured Replies

Agree ;)

Aint Texan its a point you made but, don't forget how much billions USA gives out to other country's that claim to be our friends. I know the old motto "keep your friends close but, your enemies closer" but Shish!! could you amagine using that for health care or free college in the good ol'USA instead:-?

Don't forget Chapter 7's-And the credit purchasing we are taught-grandmaw would be turning over in her grave if she knew about that.

You know a new married couple say in the early 20's with credit can build a material wealth instantly the same as mom & dad has that took them a life time to build. Differance is mom & dad usually own it all close to free and clear, and said young married couple are paying out that poop shoot for loans.

We are not taught anymore how to save or buy wisley. Look at the depression, it taught them to save. ;)

I agree with you, we live in a society/culture that thrives on instant gratification. Why save for something when you can go out and buy it today and worry about paying for it tomorrow. It is now raising problems, where people cant afford what they have.

Our country was made strong on innovation and the industrial revolution. Now about all we have left are service industries and financial institutions. We do not make anything anymore.

The current period of prosperity has been one of the longest in modern history.

The last officially recognized "recession" was 3/01-11/01.

Wow< I am surprised by this! Some of the Fox links have been questionable but WINKPEDIA  , come on ! This is the worst source of information on the net. They have the worst conditions for editorial content, and if I were to use them as a citation on any paper in school: I AUTOAMTICALLY GET AN F ON THAT PAPER, and it is the same for many Universities!

Yeah we fork over tons of money to countries that are supposedly our friends.  Pakistan and Turkey to name two.  Turkey is a country that has committed genocide and countless inhumane actions and Pakistan is on the verge of becomming one of the most terrifying things on the planet...a dictatorship with intercontental ballistic missiles.

I don't see the point of paying potential enemies to be our friends.  It would be one thing if England or some reputable country needed our assistance, but it is quite another when a country that is controlled by terrorist or radical governments and is filled with anti-American sentiments or an outright hatred for our way of life is getting a HUGE portion of taxpayer dollars.  We fork over money so foriegners can have health benefits, high-tech militaries, and civil services that our country is lacking.

What about the auto-plants in Michigan that are closing shop or moving overseas?  What about the manufacturers that are laying off Americans and hiring illegals?  What about the construction businesses here in the south that are being hammered by cheaper and often illegal "alien worker" companies?  Or how about us everyday blue collar boys that can hardly afford the gas to get to work?  Those issues need to be addressed before starving in Africa, peace in the middle east, Soviet Block economic relief, and the "war" on terrorism that, in my personal opinion, is becomming tiresome and ineffective.  I love America and all she stands for, but she has GOT to get her priorities straight.  We have all the tools and resources to have the most powerful economic force in the world, but our dependency to oil, meddling in foreign affairs, and outrageous spending is getting us into a hole.

It's funny how the government wants me to pay all of my bills but they can't and won't pay their own.  They want to do too much and have too little, really.  I'd love to go to BPS and blow my entire paycheck but I don't.  I have more important issues, like feeding kids, keeping the repo man away from my trucks, and making sure my house is taken care of.  You gotta take care of the home front before you can spend on wants and desires.  There is NO law that says Pakistan has to have millions and millions of American dollars otherwise the repo man will take the White House.  I mean, honestly...

I LOVE BassResource.com.

This is such a great place to discuss our passion for Bass fishing, then get into some very thought provoking economics discussions. When can we talk about girls?

Sorry Speedbead, it was just on the 12 o'clock news, the other part of it was tax cuts for big corporations to keep them operating in the US.

I totally agree that US spending is outrageous and that a lot of our priorities are out of line, but I do believe that the war on terror is the single most important issue that we need to deal with, whatever the cost.  Agreed, we are spending a disgusting amount of money on the "war", but if that's what it takes to keep it off our soil, so be it.  If we were to fail against the terrorists, or show any weakness, none of the other issues would matter.

I think a lot of people are quick to forget about 9/11.  We all remember exactly how we felt when we heard the news.  Even when I think about it, I get goose bumps, and not the good kind.  Point is, I'm all for doing absolutely whatever we have to in order to prevent future attacks.  Granted, it could be argued that we are not being effective in our efforts and that we're wasting money; however, who are we to say that?  None of us has any idea as to the extent of what's involved in a war against terror - I wouldn't even know where to start.  I not a huge fan of politicians in general, but I honestly believe that when it comes to protecting our country and our citizens from terrorists, politicians do what they believe is right, and they actually do care about that.

Although we may be headed towards a recession, is there any other country in the world you'd rather live in?  There are always ups and downs, and I don't think there's any reason for us to freak out.  We'll weather it like we always do, even though this recent period is a little unsettling.

By the way, that's some good info in the posts above guys - I learned a lot  :)

Ok as far as money for taxpayers, rebates of $800 per individual or $1,600 per family instead of the $300/$600 that it was in 2001 for that recession.

This  purpose of  this thread was not to knock our country or to question anyone's patriotism, so let's not go down that road. The purpose of this thread was to reopen a discussion that occured during the summer , on another thread, about the construction industry. There were many interesting posts on that thread about if we were heading down the recession path. I thought it would be interesting, this being a national forum, to see how the fellas felt now that some more time has elasped since then,

Yeah Tin, after you posted that I went and looked for it.  Apparently I skimmed over it earlier in the day because it didnt have "FREE MONEY" in blinking neon.

$800 would be nice, would definitely stimulate the economy for a guide in the Guntersville area at the end of March   ;)

I'll try to look back to find this again but, I read that there was enough stock pile of wood to last us the next 3 years without restocking, which shows us how slow the building market is down.

Our customer starts have decreased an average of 40% right now we bid on remoldling and its usually for Apartments not single family.

We averaged 700 to 800 windows a day during the summer, last year we averged 500 a day :(

Not good >:(

We have some uniques resources here fellas; RW, REDLINER and RISK KID, know more about economics that any other 3 people I have met, and their insight is extremely valuable 8-)

Wow Texan, that is definatley the most informative post I have ever read here and I like how you tied it in there at the end.

And I think you are 100% right about us "adopting" these two countries and how it is just another drain on our economy.

Wow Texan,

That hurts....Texan.... :'(

I'm in AP economic right now in high school and now I'm hooked and curious on how the economy work.

I agree to spend more money on fishing gears in order to keep the US out of recession. I personally think we are going through a slow down cycle. Where we just simplely ran out of money. We'll rise again. ;)

Goverment needs to straigthen up their acts and the people needs to start spending money rationally rather then emotionaly.

I don't want to sound like a sissy or anything, but...

All of this talk of recession kind of scares me.  Is it just me?

Nice post there Aint Texan - very informative.

Although it has turned out that our presence in Iraq isn't directly part of the war on terror, as you made clear, that was the intention when we started - to take democracy to Iraq so that it didn't become a nucleus for terrorists.  Obviously that whole concept may have been flawed to begin with because we didn't realize what the cost would be.

P.S. Thank you for your service.  I can't imagine what it would be like to do what you do.

Two things you can count on.

1.  The economy will go into recession.

2.  The economy will recover.
