Fluke hookup problems

Featured Replies

Fished the fluke this morning with great action.....had probably 7-8 fish hit my lure in about an hour....the bad side to the story is I only landed 1 out of all those bites.  Im using a medium action spinning rod with 8 lb. green maxima line and a 4/0 EWG hook.  Any suggestions on what i could use that will help?

I would suggest getting a MHF rod to help drive the hook through the plastic or tex-pose the hook.  Just my two cents.

You have to feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook.

Really, that's all there is to it. Be patient and expect a strike, then you won't be so surprised and react so quickly.

I think it is probably a combination of line size ( having too much stretch ), rod not having enough backbone, and the hook possibly has to large of a diameter compared to the rest of your tackle. I think if you go up either an action in your rod or up a line size or possibly two should help your hook up ratio.

Another idea is to add a treble hook to the shaft of the main hook similiar to a trailer hook on a spinnerbait.

Try rigging your fluke "upside down".

It will still be weedless and your hookups will improve.
