I was an out of control diabetic, tipping the scales at 439. I had a bleeding heart valve and I had a Bariatric Bypass 6 years ago and have maintained my 229 weight for some time now. My diabetes is under control and my heart is doing just fine.

Obeisity is not caused soley by laziness and overeating, there are many factors in it

Do we charge  motorcyclists, smokers. drinkers, coffee freaks, trans fat lovers, over workers, people who work out to the pont that they hurt themselves,l rock climbers, parachutists and others who we wind up paying for out of our insurance pools. Fat people( I will always be one in my brain) are easy targets and they should not all be lumped into the same catagory

Every time one of you goes over the speedlimit, runs a yeallow or changes a lane without looking, you are not only endangering yourself but putting others at risk, and cause presssures to raise insurance rate; Should You be taxed for this?

Now I am by no means skinny but I am a fairly big guy at 260lbs. But I exercise regularly and I eat right most of the time. I have always been a big guy. I have a gut but other then that I am mostly muscle. I think this is completley ridiculous!!!

Someone needs to fix this!!!!

But see, I'm not for charging for people in your position. It really all comes down to the definition of "obese." In my opinion you don't fit the obese category.  Obviously, some have problems out of their control and have no way to harness their weight, whereas some feel they can destroy their body however way they please, and don't care at all about diet or excercise.

Age is irrelevant when you obviously see people who have stated they won't excercise and have no wish to be thinner or healthier.  If I'm in any way encouraging people to stay obese by paying for their health insurance, I have every right to view them with my discretion.

And no, I don't know it all.  I'm 17 years old, but I'm willing to give an opinion.  It's sad to see age is being drug into a valid argument.

I did not bring age, but qualifications in your decision or should I say judemental process. But now that you mention it, age is important ! Age brings wisdom and experience, there are many things I thought to be writeen in Granite when I was younger, that have changed and continue to change as I get older.I also have the right to my opinions especially when I see an argueable point.

So in many ways age is very relevant, I wish I had the iknowledge I have now, when I was 17, I would not have been so disrepectful to my dad and the older men close to me. Not disrespectful in words or manner but in thinking I always knew more than them. I tend to listen more to people 5 years older than me than people decades younger, it comes form experience,.

OLD ITALIAN SAYING. When you reach 18 you realize how dumb your Dad is . When you get to be 21 you can't believe how much he learned in 3 years.

Furthermore, people with diabetes or other valid medical conditions over which they have no control to which there obesity can be linked should have their medical insurance paid for by the gov't, no questions asked.

:-?

Why should my tax dollars be spent for such a thing?

This thread sucks from the beginning to the end, no one has the right to judge anybody on how they look. Just be thankful you haven't reached it yet.

So why not get it under control?  There are many diabetics who don't weigh 439.   ;)

Actually, more and more places are charging smokers more for healrh insurance.  They already pay much more for life insurance.  Car insurance takes into account the various "risks" of different age groups.

Why shouldn't people pay for their choices?

I had been a diabetic for a few years not knowing it. When I finally found out I was already over 300. I did not make good choices and did not follow directives from my docotor, my fault. How many of us do? Many more people are non compliant with all sorts of doctoers orders.

Because of my actions I got on the cycle of oral treatment, causing wieght gain, thats what happens then to Insulin. Was this partly my fault ABSOLUTELY.

We all ay for each others bad decisions. I pay for things I do not agree with everytime I pay my taxes, but wehats good for the whole may not be whats good for me.

Do you follow your doctors suggestions? My last one was thsat I needed to work less, because the heart thing may come back. I would rather die working than sit home collecting. that decision may cost my insurance company soem money. What ag bout all the years and people who pay in, inculding me and never had to use the insurance.

Obese people are easy targets, not all of obese people are lazy and shiftless, thats the undercurrent about what I am reading here.

The thing is that many slim people make bad choices that drive my rates up. The clue here is next to ther oil industry the insurance companies are making winfall profits. Sooner or late ryour particular shortcoming will come under attack, then you will see what I am saying.

First Muddy that old Italian sayign is kinda funny, I'll have to remember that one.

Second for obese people there are several factors. Some people may has some type of condition/ disease making them obease. Some people make the choice to become or stay in that state. Third because of body types and metabolisms some people are gonna tend to hover in that area. Sure they may have alot of muscle underneither but they are gonna see obese. Just something to think about people making comment about people being obese.

When you read the article they are trying to target these people just pick on someone. They want to help them and save money.

Does something need to be done? Sure. Go to a water park at Six Flags and tell me you don't think so after looking around.

Do you follow your doctors suggestions?

Why yes I do.  I have a family history of heart disease and high cholesterol.  When my numbers came back high (I was 30).  I worked with my doctor to start a regime of diet and excercise to lower my numbers to the normal range.  So far I've continued that.

My last one was thsat I needed to work less, because the heart thing may come back. I would rather die working than sit home collecting. that decision may cost my insurance company soem money.

Your decision may also cost other people money.  Why should they pay for your unhealthy decisions?

What ag bout all the years and people who pay in, inculding me and never had to use the insurance.

You didn't use insurance for your bleeding valve, bariatic surgery, diabetes, etc?

Obese people are easy targets, not all of obese people are lazy and shiftless, thats the undercurrent about what I am reading here.

Obese people are targets because their personal decisions effect others.  Smokers should also pay more for health insurance.  As should other people who choose to live unhealthy lives.  Consequences should exist for one's choices and one should be willing to pay the price for those choices.  If not, then make different choices.

The thing is that many slim people make bad choices that drive my rates up.

So charge them appropriately.

Instead of punishing people who are already obese, let's attack the problem at it's source.

Perhaps a "fat tax" on .99 cent boxes of Little Debbie snack cakes and .88 cent 2 liter bottles of cola?  If you do any grocery shopping at all you know it's a heck of a lot cheaper to eat bad than it is to fill your grocery cart with lean meat and fresh produce. Have you seen the price of a gallon of skim milk lately?

Ok, I don't really want to tax anybody's Doritos, but I will say that if you are poor, and have a family history of obesity, you will probably be obese. If you can beat it, good for you.

I eat what I want and I exercise very little, but somehow manage to stay relatively slim. It would be easy for me to say that obese people are simply lazy, but I know better.

Sorry, I'm against this fat tax.

Wait a minute, where are you finding 99 cent boxes of Little Debbies and 88 cent 2 liters?  :-?

For those of you opposed to such a tax, do you also oppose increased taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and other 'harmful' products?

Absolutely! The government knows, by past example that these taxes will not disourage usage of the offending products. It's llike drug dealers they know once addicted the person is gonna pay the tax. The same percentage of people smoke in a state Like Viurgina where the Avg. price for name brand cigs hoovers just around 20 bucks as in NY state which is at a state minimum for most premium brands at 86.30 a carton.

Would you like to see your fishing licences and hunting licences taxed , as a detterent by people who do not agree with hunting and fishing, I have seen this same concern articulated in threads here.

And by the way , with careful shopping and cooking yourself it is cheaper to feed yourself by home preparing foods.

I'm undecided really.

On one hand, I think the truth is that some people are fat because they are complacent. Nothing exceeds like excess in the U.S. There's some reason that we're the fattest overall country in the world.

On the other hand, I do know that some people have a tougher time staying trim also because of their chemistry. I guess it depends on how "obese" is determined. The BMI scale can be flawed sometimes, so what do you do?

Some of our outreach systems are pretty skewed to give hand-outs to people who abuse them. (note: Before someone flips out...I get that some people truly benefit from these things.) All in all, welfare is flawed, health-care is pretty bad, etc. Something needs to be done to reform some of these things.

Just curious what you all had to say.

I was wrong. My wife informs me that Swiss Cakes (MMMMmmm Swiss Cakes) are now $1.19. But you can still pick up Sam's Choice cola for .88 cents everday.

You guys keep discussing this....I've got to go dig up $1.19 out of my sofa cushions.

:D
