That makes you the Zen Pizza Master

thanks for starting a great thread 8-)

sauce.

So the other pizza topic got me wondering: what do you all think is the most important part of the pie? The cheese, the sauce, or the crust. We're talking just a normal cheese pizza.

Without a doubt, I think sauce, and here's how I got there:

Cheese: Mozzerella is an almost flavorless cheese (at least as cheeses go), so other then adding the ooey gooey goodness, and the stomach filling protein, it doesn't make or break a pizza. As long as it's decent quality, it's fine.

Crust: This one is tricky- for many, it's all about the crust. But it's not the most important. The crust is just a vehicle for the sauce and cheese. And although the texture of the crust can make or break a pizza, texture, as a property of food, must take a backseat to flavor....which is where the sauce comes in.

Sauce: undeniably the most important part of a pizza. This is the pies flavor. You may like the texture of the crust, but its the flavor of the sauce that you crave, whether you know it or not. If the pizza's crust and cheese are great, but the sauce is garbadge, the pizza is garbadge. But a piece of carboard with cheap cheese will still taste good if the sauce is outstanding. It's all about flavor.

So what do you guys think? Lets talk pizza! Man, now Im hungry. :)

Exactly how i feel!

KU_Bassmaster, we went up to st.louis one year and ordered a Imo's pizza for the first time. The people at our hotel said its the best around town.

So we open up the box and the cheese was liquid. So we thought okay maybe it tastes good but just seems weird. Wrong! Worst pizza ever eaten.

I think cheese and topping are the most important. Too much sauce can ruin a pizza but a pizza can be good without any sauce. I used to work at a pizza place and our cheese was mozz and white cheddar. It really gave the pizza a really good taste, a little bit different.

Well I only have 2 St Louis style places to compare.

First is the ma and pa place just down the street.  My family has been going there ever since I remember.  There sauce is a sweet (can definitely taste the red wine in it) light sauce.  Their crust is out of this world.  It's very thin but flavorful.  They even sell these crust bites things as appetizers,  I would compare then to a puffed up crackers but softer.  And then the cheese ..... yes if eaten too hot the cheese is pretty runny.  It's best to let it cool for a bit, but I think that goes for all pizza.  And like I said before, seems like people either love it or hate it.  You must not be a fan.

Then for Imo's ... I would say comparing the local Imo's to my ma and pa place down the street is like comparing McDonald's to the finest steakhouse in town.  :P
