Tennis Elbow

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to cure tennis elbow? My fishing trips last any where between 10 to 14 hours and at the end of the day my right elbow is dead. I've tried to be proactive by using an odorless joint and muscle rub, however it doesn't last. Cutting back on my fishing time is not an option. Has anyone experienced this? If so, how did you remedy the problem?

Thanks in advance.

I started suffering from the same thing last season. Between fishing and lifting weights it became unbearable. I got a brace online from Valeo a few months ago and I wear it in the weight room or any time I do anything strenuous. The inflammation/pain is almost non-existent now but I'll probably wear it until it gets too hot out or if the pain decides to come back. There are all kinds of braces online if you do a search. I like the Valeo because it can be adjusted. It really works for me so far. We'll see how it performs on the water in a month or so!

Unfortunately, cutting out your fishing till the elbow joint heals itself is the best way to eliminate the problem followed by a series of exercises that will help strengthen it.  I had the problem.  Properly treating it involves a period of eliminating the type of movements like fishing that only keep aggravating the injury.  You'll need to invest in a good brace like MD said and try and imobilize the elbow as much as possible.

Actually, it was 5Bass that recommended a good brace for me.  Go to Walmart and get yourself a tennis elbow brace.  The black one.  If you have a big arm, the knee brace is a scaled-up version that works well (that's the one I used).  Put it on your forearm about 3 inches down from the elbow, nice and tight to support the muscle.  I wore that for a couple of weeks and gave mine a rest and it went away.

Had a major problem with my left elbow in mid 80s.  4 steroid shots in elbow and 4 oral steroid pacs and all is well.  The shots are no fun but a lot better than constant pain.

I had this a few years ago. I beat it with exercises. Used the brace to help with the pain until the the exercises got things stretched out. I did not have to stop fishing but I was worried.

Tennis elbow is inflamation of the tendons and only time will heal it.  I've had it many times from golf and sometimes it take a year before it felt better, quicker if you lay off your activity.  The over the counter braces and whatnot may allow you to participate in your activity with less discomfort depending on your pain threshold, but they do not heal, only time heals.

Don't get confused with tennis elbow and a hyperextension of the elbow, different maladies and the hyperextension should heal much quicker. The best cure for either problem is refraining.

I get hyperextension from throwing 3-4 oz lures into the surf.

I opt not to put a foreign agent into my body like cortisone, I have a very high pain threshold.

whatever you do don't go to the doctor!!!!!!

I had a pain in my foot and got diagnosed with arthritis and now it hurts more because I think about it.

I'm only 36 years old!!!!!!!!!

Children can get arthritis, it's not just a disease for seniors. There is lot to be said for pain being physco sematic, that's what makes hypochondriacs.

I'd only consult a physcian if your pain is acute and you are in agony, otherwise let nature run it's course, time generally cures these maladies.

I've dealt with it before and the doctor told me to put that arm in a sling and rest it. Only thing that worked for me. That and telling Rosey Palm I was too busy to play. ;)

This is what I did.Apply ice only no HEAT  three times per day for 20 minuates to the elbow.Walmart sells enterac coated Ibuprofen 200mg.I started taking 800 mg 4 tabs 3 times per day.Take with food. After a few weeks when your elbow starts feeling better use a hand metal squize device, the ones shaped like a V.Start off by using it 10 time only per day for  three times per week.Go up the next week to 15 times per day 3 times per week.I have worked up to 70 times per day 3 times a week work both hands also.I do this year round and it has made a world of difference. When your elbow starts feeling better you can go down on the Ibuprofen  to 600 mg three times a day.If you are still having discomfort you can switch to Naporsyn 400 mg two times a day. If you apply heat it causes more inflamation and pain.Good luck Jim
