Got woke up by a neighbor yesterday morning to tell me my Xterra was hit in the parking lot at 3:40 in the morning and the driver drove off. Fortunately he watched were the person went and the van was still there. Gave all the information I had to the cop and he went to there house and found the driver. He was a 17 year old kid driving mom's van. They live in a different court but was parking in ours because he didn't want her to know how late he was coming home. Turns out the registration for the van was revoked due to failure to do emissions test and insurance lapse. They provided an insurance policy number but not sure if its valid yet. He got charged with two things, don't know yet exactly what but will have to appear at his court date. Worse thing is I missed my daughters 5th grade graduation ceremony because of this. Repair estimate stands at $2,400

ouch,  I hope they have good insurance.

Hate to hear you missed the grad too.

Sorry to hear that, especially since you missed your daughter's ceremony. At least you were able to find out who did it.

Man, i hate that; i had the same thing happen to me....hit and run in a parking lot.

But, dude, that's $2400 damage???

What kind of vehicle is it??

wow man sorry to hear about that but he hit the front and the back? kids these days haha.

There's a freshman parking lot at my school. One guy came back late tired (and probably drunk) and fell asleep as he was entering coming down a hill. He took out about 4 cars with his Tahoe. I bet that was quite the bill!

;D

Anyway, I hope the other person has insurance. Best of luck to you!

C'mon Cart, they say people who laugh live longer  ;)

I got clipped by a lady at my kid's school who provided a policy number from an expired insurance card. Luckily there was a resource officer (deputy) at the school to write it up as she was wanting to just give me a couple hundred to get my truck fixed. I told her no it was more than $300.00 worth of damage and had the police fill out the report.

Turns out she no insurance so I had to file uninsured motorist claim (-$500.00 for me) AND she was bringing her kids illegally to that school by using her mother's address. She got several fines from what I understood and her kids got booted from school.

Good luck man, if they don't have insurance take them to small claims court for your deductable.

I got hit by a sleeping driver a year and a half ago.  The rest of the general population was lucky.  It was just me and my boat on that road at that time of the morning.  Had he gone a mile further he would've entered a much more traveled right of way and the potential for bodily injury to others escalated immensely.  I find nothing funny about someone driving a 2 ton vehicle irresponsibly and causing property damage.

A good idea but it doesn't mean you get your money, it only means you are owed the money(providing you win of course).

If you win a judgement is rendered against the defendant.  Now you hope they pay voluntarily but if they don't you have additional costs in filing for garnishment, locating their place of employment and bank accounts. For the judgement to be part of their permanent record you, not the court, must file with credit bureaus at your own expense.

This is the procedure in most Michigan counties, may be different in your jurisdiction.

It isn't worth the time and expense in most cases.
