Jury Duty tomorrow

Featured Replies

Here's an excuse that I once used try to get out of a test, I believe you could apply it to this or any other situation...

"Ahh, yes, Jury Duty, well you see, I would love to but the thing is, my psychiatrist doesn't recommend that I place myself under any stressful situations after "The Incident" occurred. He says that "I manifest my stress into unprovoked and uncontrollable acts of violence toward the perceived cause of the stress." I think I'm fine though, there's no sharp objects in the room right? So, when do I start?

This method didn't work so well for me but by all means, go ahead and try it ;D I personally would love to serve on a jury, I would find it really interesting.

I was summons twice within a year.  Once federal, and the other for county.   I got to serve on one trial for federal.  An inmate at a local prison was accusing the wardon of cruel and unusual punishment.  Yeah, thats a real easy one to prove.   The first time I had to go over for the selection process I had to admit I couldn't serve because I knew the guy who got stabbed by an inmate.  I think Burley went to school with him.  Knowing him, he probably deserved it.

In our county court, I sat on a fraud case.  Every other time I was a part of the selection process I didn't make it without being cut. I enjoy doing it and don't mind if I have to again in the future.

if you ever want out of jury duty, just wear shorts and flip flops when you have to serve. i was summoned about 7 years ago and unbeknownst to me, i didn't know you had to wear proper attire. when i checked in, the lady at the counter scolded me and said "sir, you can't wear those clothes in a court house". she then sent me home and said i would be called at a later date.

You can have my turn.

Id rather be making money.

Unless you are doing something illegal or getting paid under the table, you do get re-imbursed by your employer. At least in good old corrupt Illinois. California might be different. It is in alot of ways.

I served and when no one wanted to be foreman, I volunteered.

I got to say "your Honor, we the jury, find the defendant guilty"

I was nervous as hell when I said it but I actually felt like the process worked.

Knowing him, he probably deserved it.

Everything I've heard about that incident indicated that he did a good bit to provoke the attack.

Then again, knowing the people we know who work in the area prisons, it isn't all that surprising.

"The basic rule in California is that you're required to give your workers time off for jury duty. However, you don't have to pay non-exempt employees for the time they're away from work, unless you choose to do so or it's required by a union contract. But keep in mind that employees who are exempt from overtime must be paid their full salary if they perform any work in a week during the week they are on jury duty. Plus, you can require employees to work normally scheduled shifts on days when the jury isn't in session."

Plus, I'm not big on getting paid for work I didnt do.

If I was a judge and you showed up looking like that, you would be held for contempt of court.

The two or three times I've had to go to court, I always made an effort to dress appropriately.  The bad thing is you often see a large amount of people who do not care about doing so.  How anyone could think it is right to show up to court wearing shorts and flipflops is beyond me.

Every summons I have got, and my wife got last year, states how you should be dressed. I would be surprised if it is left off of any of them.

i guess that is the difference between someone like you who has a cartoon moniker and lives in southwest bygod virginia and me who lives in south florida.

RW, you don't owe an explanation nor an apology. Just ticked from the post & I probably took it the wrong way. If I came off sounding harsh, please excuse the harshness, BD today & getting much older & for some reason, less tolerant. I like everyone here (even the shimano guys).
