Rage Tail Shad

Featured Replies

Has anyone done any good on this bait. It almost as loud as a buzz bait when buzz it on top. Anyone had any success on it or have different ways to rig it

I have only rigged it as stated on the back of the package, but I use them in place of buzzbaits nowadays.  The shad color and pearl white have been my favorites thusfar.

These are great baits.  They make a ton of noise and you an fish them about anywhere without snagging.  I've got a tournament coming up on a grass filled lake and the matted parts will get a workout with this bait along with a frog.

Yeah these are great, I've caught quite a few bass on buzzbaits but have been reaching for this instead, it doesn't get tangled and is virutally weedless, I would definately go with a EWG 5/0 hook, I was fishing this with 3/0 and missing a lot of fish, go by the directions and hooke these bad boys onto a 5/0.

I like the smokey shad, and for the toads I like the Watermelon.Red.

My favorite for the Rage Shad is 4/0 EWG heavy line hook. You will find that the 5/0 hook point is entering 1/8" too far back and into the tail. Some like it that way though. For the Rage Toad, 5/0 EWG works great.

Fished them once two weekends ago as a topwater search bait early am on a very pressured lake. I managed one keeper at 1lb 5ozs and had another MASSIVE blowup by the boat but was so surprised I was unable to hook up. I agree with big O. Once the fish that slammed my bait went under with the bait I had no issues getting a solid hookset with a 4/0 EWG heavy line hook. I can't wait to try these out again at a local pond this weekend in my dad's canoe. This place has trophy fish and is virtually unfished. Cannot wait to see if I can get a pig to attack it. I also agree with Brad, this thing fished around grass is probably just as good as a frog (except for the fact that you obviously have to fish it a lot quicker as the action is not as great under water).

The keeper from last weekend (nothing special, but a start... and it makes me a believer). It came off a main lake shallow grass point in about 2.5' of water:

Way to go, Crazy!  Hope you get a chance to go back after that big one soon.

I just hung and landed a 6lb bass about an hour ago on a Rage Shad.  Gotta love these things ;D

Could someone please post a pic of how they rig these. I cant seem to get it to run right in the water. I must be rigging it wrong.

Thanks

It's very simple. Just texas-rig it weightless like you would a senko worm. Now you would be tempted to rig it like a fluke and run the hook vertically (the plane of the hook in the same plane as that of the shad). However, the body of the shad will not allow you for a good hook-set this way, so .... run the hook through the side of the shad and leave it exposed, or hide it weedless.

My personal favorite: I don't use it as a topwater bait. I slice with my fillet knife a tiny incision in the belly of the shad, right behind and underneath the head. Then insert a small (1/8 oz) bulletweight nose first until the weight is completely in. This will not affect the action of the shad. It will just allow it to sink vertically at a slow rate. Run it at whatever depth you like.

K thanks. I was rigging it like a fluke. Cant wait to try it out the right way.

im a believer of this bait now! just caught 2 nice ones yesterday, the action of these baits are awsome. work really well as a buzzbait alt. make sure when your fishing it, that the tail is makin a nice "plop plop" cadence. i generally fish em with a medium retrieve, but you gotta let the fish tell you what they want.

Hey neBassin, Go to www.ragetail.com and on the shad product page there is alot of hooking instructions including photos, videos etc.

even using thick braid and retrieving with the rod tip high, i have to work it really fast to keep the ragetail shad on top of the water...is it that way for you guys too? i wish they came up with a formulation or design where it floated at rest so it could be worked slower.

If rigged tail up, then they should ride on top of the water at a VERY slow cadence.  I change the angle of my rod to dictate what kind of action I want the tail to have.  With it low, it will be much more subtle than with the rod tip up higher.  This gives you the option of how much action you want at various speeds.  You can get rage shads moving pretty good with the tail being pretty quiet and vice versa.

you shouldn't be working very hard at all to keep it on top of the water.

I use a 7ft and a 6.6ft rod.  Works for both.  it's not a huge difference, but it does help control how much action you want.

Caught a couple on the shad yesterday - great bait, especially for night fishing. I agree - the best I've found is a 4/0 EWG superline hook (Owner J-Hook).

My favorite application for the bait is fishing the open areas adjacent to lily pad fields. They really draw the fish out well. Then throw weightless plastics to the edge of the pads, then a t-rigged weighted plastic to the holes in the pads, then chunk a hollow-bodied frog way back into the slop to get the lazy girls. That should just about cover it ;D
