any decent kits for a first time plastic user?

Featured Replies

Ive never fished platics so this is all new to me. I picked up a plueger supreme 8035 and a 6'6M lighting rod. Looking for stuff i can fish in heavy weeds, moss and tree's

I'm not sure about any kits, but these soft plastics have been great for me recently:

Netbait Baby Paca Craws

Zoom Baby Brush Hogs

GYCB Kreatures

I fish the Baby Pacas and Kreatures on 3/0 Gamakatsu EWG Hooks (2/0 for the Brush Hogs) with 1/8-1/4 oz tungsten bullet weights. I like pitching them to cover and slowly hopping and crawling them back. Be a line watcher, because alot of the bites will come on the fall.

I don't know of any kits either but i can suggest some for you.

GYCB Kreature

GYCB Senko

Zoom Worms & Lizards

Zoom Shakey Head worms with a shakey head jig

Zoom tubes

Just buy some Gamakatsu 3/0 and 4/0 hooks, T-Rig em' and you'll be set.

Don't forget Zoom Super Flukes rigged weightless and weedless with a 4/0 EWG offset Gamakatsu hook.

The fellas have given some good advice on what plastics. Just wanted to add, as far as colors try something like Watermelon Seed or Green Pumkin ;)...

I didn't mention the super flukes because he said he had a Medium action rod. I use to use a medium action rod to fish the supers but i couldn't seem to get a good hookset, i switched to a MH and now i do fine with them. Do you have any hookup problems with a Medium action and super flukes?

i actually decided on the one peice 6' mh rod. Just got it all ordered a few hours ago.

Thanks guys some of those are the ones i was looking at even the colors that where mentioned. There is a pond by me i know i could tear up if i could get something down there to the fish and not get all caught up. nothing but cover weeds, moss all the way around. You could see the feeder fish in the nw corner of the pond so im going to start there.

Can't go wrong with a 5" or 6" Senko, wacky rigged weightless. Catches a lot of fish, can catch quality fish, and you experience several different types of bites that you will experience throughout fishing plastics.

Watermelon seed with red flake is a great color to start with.

I fish super flukes on a 7ft ML Dobyns 702, used to fish them on a Medium. The Medium was PERFECT, the ML is a bit under powered but I do just fine for the times I do throw a fluke.

Don't waste your money on kits.  Buy a package of Owner 5102-131 hooks and a package of Berkley 7" Power Worms and just fish.

That just about says it right here,i have probaly 50 diff color worms 90% of my whole fishing arsenal..over the yrs blue, watermelon, and black have been my most consistant colors with blue my most confident color ,so i have 200 lbs of plastic worms  that may see H2o when my 5 month old daughter is 10  LOL

You don't need a lot to start out; I'll recommend a 4" finesse worm (pick your favorite brand).  I feel this is the perfect bait for Texas Rig training.  You need a small bait that will get a lot of bites so you get plenty of practice setting the hook.  A 4" worm will offer lots of practice...it gets a lot of attention!

Watermellon/red flake Fat Ika with size 4 EWG Gammy hooks rigged backwards has been working great for me!

GYCB Senko

GYCB Fat Ika

GYCB Kreature

GYCB Kut-Tail

GYCB Swimming Senko

That would be a complete "package".

All of these baits can be fished on 4/0

EWG Gamakatsu Offset Worm Hooks.

The Senko and Fat Ika are fished weightless

I like a 1/8 oz bullet weight for the

Kut-Tail and sometimes the Kreature.

A 1/4 oz bullet weight for the Swimming

Senko and you're ready to go!

Senko.

8-)

Not at all!  In fact, I caught my personal best (the one in my avatar) on a 5' 6" Medium Light Action trigger grip casting rod (Gander Mountain's "Guide Series" Competitor).

I hauled that 4 + pounder and a handful of 2 to 3 pounders all in a single morning.  Rod worked like a dream.

And get this: my reel was a Zebco 33 Platinum edition spincaster!   ;)

I have bought some of those kits, and they stink.  You get a couple of good worms, then a bunch of clumsy looking pieces of junk that wouldn't catch a starving fish.

My favorite soft plastics are:

Trick Worms by Zoom

Cane Toads by Gambler

Super Flukes by Zoom

Giggy Stick by Gambler

Gary Yamamoto Senko

Berkley Power Craws

Everyone has offered some great advice.  I'll add to it in that I would recommend picking a couple of basic colors.  Pick out maybe a dark green, purple, and black color.  Really, most people will recommend just a few basic colors.  Next,m pick out a few styles of worms.  Everybody has pretty much mentioned all the top ones already.  Get something with a long curly tail, some kind of stick bait (like a senko), maybe a tube worm, and some of the others out there like finesse worms, ringworms, and french fries.  This way, you pick out a few different styles of worms in a couple basic colors.

For most people, I think fancy colors catch us more than the fish.  So by limiting your colors to a couple basic ones and then a couple styles of worms you'll have a good selection to get you started.

Top it off with some 3/4 or 4/0 size EWG worm hooks or offset hooks and you'll be good to go.
