Thinking about going to Clearwater, FL for vacation in April

My family and I had plans to vacation in Gatlinburg, TN this April but plans fell through.  Now I'm scrambling to come up with new plans.  I'm thinking of flying the family down to Florida for a few days.  The kids are too old to do the Disnaey/Themepark thing, and my wife now wants a nice beach vacation.  I've heard Clearwater is super nice.  I've been there once but didn't get to do much.  Is Clearwater a decent place to go?  I've heard good things, and the beaches seem nice.  How is it in April?

You can drive up to Lake Tarpon and catch some nice fish ;). I went last year with the family. Beaches are nice. We had fun.

St. Augustine Beach, Vilano beach (both are next to each other) and Cocoa Beach are my favorite beaches in Florida. Clearwater is okay, but it a lot of fun in St. Pete beach and surrounding areas. I also like South Beach, lot of fun on Ocean Boulevard.

P.S. Check out St. Augustine, Florida.  ;) It near Jacksonville. It also near Daytona Beach.

If you enjoy concrete, traffic jams, and condos then Clearwater is great.

Look at the east coast as suggested.

If you catch a red tide period you won't want to be near the beach on the gulf shores.

Clearwater has some of the nicest beaches in Florida.

Nothing better than sitting at a beach bar, sipping a cold one and watching the sunset.

Just stay away from downtown and all of the traffic.

Red Tide usually happens in the summer, so I don't think that will be a problem in April.

If you are looking to do some fishing while you are here, jsut let me know.

In April you messin with spring break I live just north of clearwater and am there often. I love the beaches and hate the traffic, St. Augusting in my mind is the BEST vacation spot in florida. I go every year with my family, plus your only and Hour and a half from Universal Studios which you are never to old for :) Also alot of history with Spain coming here, you have the old jail, ripley's, light house, gator farm, there is just so much to do. now dont get me wrong I love clearwater but all you have is the beach and not much else.

You're never too old for Disneyworld ;D

I've been to Clearwater twice and as George said, traffic is a nightmare. We were there during the Kingfish festival. Nice beaches and hotels though. We hopped on a party boat and caught a mess of groupers and took them to a place called Cooters (which I think was the predecessor to Hooters) and they cooked them up for us. Delicious.

I've been to St. Augustine 3 times, my last visit was 2 years ago. I love it enough to make an attempt to live there after college. I wish I had opportunity to eat at the Conch House restaurant, but it was tad bit expensive then. I'll be 21 later on this year, and hopefully I can make a trip back down there soon and party at the Treehouse tavern. ;D ;D

Thanks for the input.  I've been through St. Augustine.  I'll check into that.

I like the Clearwater area myself.  Busch Gardens is a ton of fun!  IF you do decide to go, you I highly recommend going to eat at Lenny's Restaurant.  They have some of the best biscuits and gravy on the planet and their home fries are incredible!

Clearwater is amazing. The beaches south of Clearwater are beautiful, and Tampa is nice too. Definitely go there. I had a great spring break there 9 years ago

I figure by April most of the college spring-breakers are gone.  Aren't they usually there in march?
