Any other turkey hunters out there?

Featured Replies

I'm getting stoked for turkey season which opens on the 15th for us.  Heard my first gobble of the year a couple evening ago when I went scouting.  Got me all jazzed.  I'm a little bummed that this will be my last turkey season for a while since there aren't any where I'm moving to this summer.  Anyway, to those that are hitting the woods this spring...good luck!

I am headed to Georgia at the end of the month for a week to visit my brother and TURKEY HUNT!  He has been on them and scouted for me so I hope to bag a couple of long beards, this time around.  I have a new call I want to try to see if I can bring ol'tom in close.  Will post pics if I bag one  ;)

I had two close encounters this past weekend, both birds within 40 yards but never a clear shot.  The one on Sunday was hammering his head off but we could never get him to commit another 10 yards and look over the bluff.  Going out right now to try and roost one for in the morning before work.

Been out twice so far. Took one shot @ 30yards, but my arrow was deflected by a small branch about halfway between us. Bummer.

Headed out tomorrow and Wednesday to give it another go. Our birds arent really in the swing of things yet, I imagine because we have had a series of really cold storms roll through the past few weeks. Just waiting for a little sustained warmth to get them going.

Good luck. you huntin in Washington?

I sure am, here on the east side.  I've got a few spots picked out.  A buddy and I went and moved his ground blind yesterday.  Driving out we saw a strutter with about 10 hens.  This my bird from 2008.  I got skunked last year.  I used a bow all season.

Fourbizz you do any good today?  I made a mistake and missed a decent bird this morning before work.

Didnt make it out today, but I did go yesterday. Yesterday was our first warm day in almost a week, so I thought the birds would be more active than they have been.

I didnt see a single bird all day. But I spent an hour and a half calling to a bird that would answer every time but would not move to me at all. He was on another piece of property that I do not have access to. That was a bummer. But, I'm headed back out on Friday. There will be a few of us this time, so hopefully one of us will put one down.

Pretty much like mine except I saw the birds, if only he wouldn't have hung up behind a fallen tree for the first 20 min I'd have a pic.  The good thing is he wasn't the dominate bird out there so I didn't mess that chance up.  I'm probably heading out saturday morning and then do a little fishing before hunting a different piece of property on sunday.

I shot one on Sat. of youth weekend here in southern KY. (i'm 14), that makes 4!! ;D

Here's one I picked off this morning before work. The B-mobile was too much for him. Full sprint to the decoy once he saw it.

21 lb, 9 7/8" beard, 1 in. and 1/4(broken) spurs

Awesome bud! We have had a bunch of nasty weather here lately, but I did make it out for a few hours yesterday.

Hunted a VERY small piece of property (~15 acres) that has had birds roosting across the road from it. Set up in complete darkness. Only put out two hens, left my jake in the bag. Made fly down noises in the graylight. Never heard a peep from a bird of any type. Sat there till 8, packed up, made it 300 yards down the road and there was a good size tom in full strut, 15ft from the road, in someones driveway, lol. That has been the story of my life this season. Ah well, they are all real henned up and since I only have access to a couple properties, I havent been able to bring them to me, hopefully when most of the hens nest up I will have a chance to call one in. This is my first season with a bow though, couldve got my 3 with a gun already, but thats ok, it will be worth it when i stick one of them ;D

Just realized that I didnt post the synopsis of my Friday hunt either.

My buddies came up from the Bay and my best friend and I stayed up all night drinking cheap beer. I mean all night. Never went to sleep.

Got to the property before six, dropped them off at a couple good locations to set up and wait for the sun. I made it to where I had called to that bird earlier in the week and set up a couple dekes. Within minutes of being there, he was gobbling from the exact tree I had hoped for him to be in. I started talking to him and he answered desperately to every single one of them. This went on for half an hour before I heard him stir and take off... then fly in the complete wrong direction >:(

Didnt hear him make a sound after he hit the ground, and I sat there calling occasionally till 9.  My buddy had a small tom/big jake come skirting around the outside of his setup about 7, and other than that, we didnt see a single bird, besides the ones in people driveways on the way home >:(

Anybody ever seen a white turkey? There is one in one of these flocks. Not completely white, just a few brown feathers here and there. Is it a feral domestic turkey, albino, or some sort of other pigment disorder? If it is a white wild bird, she is going down this fall ;D

Bizz, I actually heard of a guy in my hometown killed a white turkey on our opening day. I haven't seen pictures or talked to him so I'm not for sure.

My little brother killed one yesterday morning. 9" beard with 1" spurs. He started calling and the ol tom flew down about 10 yards from where he was setup  ;D He's a lucky one, my brother.

I actually had a white hen bring in a bird two years ago. He fell to the same decoy as yesterday's bird. I'm pretty sure she was either domestic or a cross between domestic/wild.  I watched a Knight and Hale show the other night and they had a silver phase tom come in, looked very healthy but it was a cross.

The thing I hate the most is a peacock in the flock.  You can forget about ever getting a bird until you get rid of it.
