Heinz 57

Why the hell does this stuff cost $5 a bottle?  It's just zesty catsup.

I have no idea.  I mostly use leftover ketchup packages from fast food restaurants.

Because it has raisins and anchovies in it.

Or is it just zesty ketchup?

Just like fishing equipment, it's not all created equal. I have tried other brands, but always go back to Heinz. I guess I'm a ketchup snob. ::)

To clarify, Burley appears to be talking about Heinz 57 which is a ketchup-y cooking sauce sold by Heinz. It is different than regular Heinz ketchup (or at least it is marketed that way)

A1 is where it's at but it's overpriced just like Heinz 57. I've wondered this same thing about both of them for years. Hell, if a restaurant brings you a bottle of A1, as soon as you leave they grab it like it's a gold bar.

I always cringe when anyone dumps Heinz or A1 onto a fine steak.

I do have an outstanding pot roast recipe that calls for Heinz 57 as one of the main ingredients.

Thanks Dan:

I like the ketchup. Can take or leave the steak sauce. At $5 I will probably leave it.

I also prefer their ketchup.

Ketchup on a big medium-rare cheeseburger is one of life's simple pleasures.  8-)

If you see me add A1 to a steak, its not a quality steak.

Those sauces are pretty decent, but on a quality steak ( that you can't buy in market, only sold at packing houses for restaurant & hotel use) I marinate them in zip sauce.

Heinz 57 for burgers

A-1 for roastbeef sammiches

+1 to if I add either to a steak, it is not a good steak

you add either to a steak I cooked, I may not cook you another one  >:(

;D
