Need a GPS system for wifes car

Featured Replies

Any suggestions on a GPS system for my wifes car?

I am thinking about the voice activated Garmin Navi.

It must be very easy to use.

Anything Garmin should be great. I believe my mom and sister have a Garmin Nuvi 250W or something like that and they love it.

Garmin is the best GPS out there IMO :)

Get her one of those new side imaging Lowrance units and install the antennae under the front axle with a clamp so you can take it off quickly when you go fishing :)

Get her a smart phone and an FM tranceiver.  Best GPS Ive had yet.  It updates its own maps, I can talk to it to tell it wheree to take me, and Im payin for the smart phone plan anyway.......

Teach her to read a map :D..   Just kidding with ya, I couldn't resist.

LOL. Maybe she needs a police escort??? She has a new job that requires a lot of commuting in the tri county area. I tried printing out google maps with directions, and she still got lost in Miami. Missing street signs, alternates due to construction, and insane street planning. Downtown Miami is a mess, a zoo, and dangerous. GPS is the way to go. Our cell phone contract will expire in December so I will check into a new smarter phone.

If I had side imaging Lowrance, there is no way I would  put it on the car (if it was possible) ;)

We have a Magellan in my wife's Jeep. It is super simple, and really affordable. Does everything we need.

Take your pick, I think ours is a 2000 series.

The navigation of the magellan is ok. My biggest problem with the magellan units was they have a safety feature where you couldn't navigate on the unit when in route. This may have changed from two years ago, but if it didn't I would pass. My favorite units are the garmin nuvi's. TomTom is ok, but the garmin is a much cleaner looking unit. Garmin also came out with lane assist which is very nice.

I also vote for Garmin. Make sure you have the "settings" dialed in. If not sometimes the GPS may take you "the long way" because it is avoiding traffic or tolls.

Thanks for the tip

I have a TomTom One that works fairly well, but I don't think I'd recommend it unless you plan on replacing it every 12 to 18 months. The cost to update the maps beyond that is roughly the same as a new unit.

Many tomtom units update for free.

I've been pretty happy with my Nuvi 265WT

All 3 brands mentioned do a quality job with very little differences.  I cant say I have ever seen the issue mentioned on the Magellun about not being able to change routes while in the middle of a route.  I do that easily with an entry level unit I have.

I wish that was the case with mine. I'm about 12 months behind on updates, so it's $40 to download the most current maps and another $40 for quarterly updates over the next year, and they won't sell me the packages seperately. >:( It'll cost me $80 to get it up to date or I can replace the unit with a newer model for a little more and get a free update.

How old is your GPS? I know when I sold GPS's two years back what I mentioned occurred. Things may have changed, or there could have been an option I overlooked.

Ive had it 2-3 years.  Its a 1200 model if I am not mistaken.
