Recommended Posts

As the title suggests. I just picked up my first droid (x) last weekend. What are your favorite apps?

Check out Tango. It allows you to video message iPhone/ android users.

the bar code scanner is nice for picking apps. appbrain allows you to scan apps to your phone. pretty sick.

livetv is a pretty good app for watching games (tv).

I like the Weatherbug and Facebook apps. I also like the barcode scanner.

Does it keep itself current for you? When I had it, the notifications and such were hours off (sometimes even by a day) so I just switched to using the site.

Arity - 3d graphing calculator

Barcode Generator

Catch - note taking app, also records GPS and you can take photos (good for keeping fish logs) it syncs on their site too.

Cube Extended - I just got this music player and it seems pretty cool, I also use Museek (better for using it on Random and Smart Shuffle).

Dolphin Browser HD - almost a must. Tabbed browsing and a lot of cool ad on's. A lot of people claim to have an issue with speed, but I don't.

Google Earth

Dropbox - Gives you 2GB of online space that you can access from any PC or your phone. Great for backups and files. If you sign up, PM me and I will give you a refferal link and you and myself will get 250 MB of extra space (they max out the free accounts at 8 GB.)

Glyder 2 - (get the free one) a fun game to kill time with, you just fly around and collect things...

Guns'n'Glory - another free game. You set up cowboys and other western like people and shoot at settlers that come through canyons (it's similar to a Real Time Strategy game, just try it, it's fun).

Key Ring - Keeps all of my club cards in my phone and they can scan the barcodes off the screen.

Listen - Podcast's

Live TV - Flaky, but you can watch some major networks on your phone. Pretty cool (when it works).

My Maps Editor - Very awesome app for mapping out lakes and other things. It's basically google maps, but you can draw on it and add notes then save the link and share it with others (I map structure and fish with it).

Pandora - Online music player, I think you all know what it is.

RemoteDroid - Use your phone as a wireless keyboard and mouse. Works great (I use it when I watch movies from my PC to my TV) It uses a WiFi connection, all you do is install the PC software, enter the IP it gives you into the phone and it's done!

TeslaLED - Uses the camera flash for a flashlight

Thinking Space - 'Mind Mapping' software. I use it to brainstorm ideas or keep lengthy notes.

TweetCaster - I use it to update twitter and FB in 1 shot. Works better than the twitter app HA.

And the most important app:

Wilford Brimley Soundboard! HA

Yes, it keeps updated to the minute.  I have set up several locations hundreds of miles apart (fishing lakes, of course) so I can keep tabs on the current weather before I go there. It also gives you a weather overlay map of where you are. Great for tracking nearby storms to see if they're gonna hit you or not.

Also have to add the Google Maps app to the list. That thing is awesome. It also has a weather overlay.

Oops, I meant the facebook app :)

The X comes with a standard weather thing. It does what I need it too, but if I did get a weather app, it would be Weatherbug :P

I really love it.....just make sure you're always near a power source if you watch a lot of vids / games because it is a battery eater.

I've even used the kick-stand WAY more than I ever thought I would. ;D

I haven't used the HDMI-out or the video/call feature yet, so I have a bit more playing to do.

My wife's contract is up next month and I'm getting her the Samsung, so I'll be interested to see which one I prefer.

I don't like hardware keyboards so that's already a + on the EVO's side. The super-amoled screen on the Samsung does look very, very nice. I hear its the best screen for outside use right now as well. I'm interested to check it out.

BTW....the 8MP cam takes some very decent pics for a phone camera.

Yes, the Facebook app is real time, but it's limited in scope.  For example it's often difficult to click on links people post, or dive into profiles, etc. But it's fine if you just want to read status updates, which is mostly what I do.l

Just got my Samsung fascinate yesterday and this thing is sweet.  I cannot believe the difference in speed and usability compared to my old LG Touch.  The screen is super bright, nice colors, very easy to use from the touch side of things.  This thing is a beast.  Still playing around with it, but the more I find the better it gets.

Nice nick! I wish my phone had the screen the Samsungs did. The HTC Incredibles used to have that screen in it, but they stopped using them because they were having issues keeping up with demand... I think Samsung was just holding back so they could make them and put them in their own phones... Well played Samsung, well played!

I am with you Nate. Love the screen on this Fascinate. I agree with you on the whole keeping them in demand and then pushing them to their own phones.  It is a sweet display though.

I reckon the only real issue I have seen with it is just like any other electronic device you buy nowadays there has to be a ton of extra BS on it. I would like to delete about half of the preinstalled apps as they are not ones I would use. Yet Verizon has decided that this is no possible nor needed. Oh well, I will keep on messing with it.

When my X got the 2.2 update, they added VZ Navigator... Who the heck is going to be dumb enough to pay $10 per month for that, when google maps/navigation does a better job AND does more? City ID is another dumb one that I can't get rid of...

You CAN get rid of them by 'rooting' your phone, but that voids the warranty and you'll make yourself a nice paperweight if you don't know what you're doing :) You also lose the over the air updates.

Glenn, I'd be using that if T-Mobile worked around here. The EVO is a great phone too, but again, Sprint service is almost null around here...

T-mobile does not have great service around my house.  it works fine at the office, but not at home.  Same with Sprint and AT&T.  I guess that is what I get for living in the country.  I was reading the local paper yesterday and there were about 10 different notices in there about multiple locations where AT&T is going to be erecting towers within the next year or so.  That may change things a bit.

I'd stick with Verizon. I had AT&T for years before I got Verizon. I was constantly having issues with my phones (it's the stupid bloatware ROM's and firmware they put in their devices, Verizon is guilty of it too, but they aren't as bad). Verizon's network is about to get some upgrades... That's all I'm going to say :) I haven't heard any chatter about AT&T getting anymore 3g or 4g rolled out. We STILL don't have 3g coverage for AT&T and we were promised it 2 years ago.

Verizon has all ready announced their 4G will be out this fall and AT&T has said they won't have 4G iphones till 2012

Oh I didn't know it was officially announced, thats good. AT&T has been super slow making any improvements on their network. They need to step it up, we get a lot of people switching from AT&T to Verizon, the Droid's are really putting a dent in AT&T (I realize the Iphone has the majority, but android is going well).

T-Mobile's 4G network is already live in major cities, and is rolling out into other areas as we speak.  Its 3X faster than Sprint's (according to independent tests).

? The maximum speed over the T-mobile 4G network in those cities is about 7 Mbps (I believe T-Mobile's phones are actually throttled at 7.2 Mbps) - while Sprint 4G on an EVO can peak over 10. I'm not sure where these tests are getting their claims, unless they're basing it on theoretical speeds, which are nearly irrelevant. HSPA+ (T-mobile) may theoretically be able to reach 100Mbps, and WiMax (Sprint) can reach 1 Gbps, but if the phones and network don't support it (and none of them do) than it is merely a future ambition.

At this point, nearly all the supposed 4G networks operate at similar speeds (and can not technically be referred to as 4G.....a standard which has not been met yet. What exists is 3G networks on steroids, using "4G" merely as a marketing term.)
