Wow! A 50-pound striper on a 2-pound line

Featured Replies

Wow.  :o Must have been a heck of a fight!  ;D

What a catch...wonder how true it is though, afterall he was fishing alone.......

The method Sheffield used was drifting an eel in less than 30 feet of water. He was fishing alone.

Not accusing him of lying but how do we know it was really 2lb line?

Ya, I can honestly say I cannot and do not believe that.  :-X

I know that area where he was fishing and it can be big water in December.  A lot of boats are wirelining for stripers next to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.  It's traditionally a time for heavy tackle.

2 lb test?  While fishing an eel?  In the mouth of the bay?  Alone?

Makes me raise an eyebrow.

Regardless, a 50 lb striper is huge.  Someday.... ::)

Yep that was a nice pic,

What about the record officials :-? how do they get confident that this is true and he warrants the record keeper on a 2pd test line :-? Lie detecter test?? :-?

The other thing is he doesn't brag about the gear he used? just strange coming from a fisherman that supposley got a record

This year if you can get over to RI. :)

That's amazing even without being 2lb line!

Fish looks short for a 50 but....scale doesn't lie.  If they are going for documentation, I will give them the benefit of the doubt.  Time will tell.

Come to Virginia:

VA freshwater record - 53 lbs 7 oz

VA saltwater record - 68 lbs 1 oz

Scales do lie. They need to be calibrated from time to time. I'm not a pro on stripers but that does not look like a 50 pounder to me. And he'll need some proof that it was 2 lb test. Guiness is strict about that stuff. Since he was fishing alone he would need a photo containing himself and the supposed 2 lb test hooked onto the striper. If, by chance he can supply that, they'll just turn around and ask him how the hell he managed to take a photo like that while battling what does not appear to be a 50 pound striper with 2 lb test. According to the aricle his goal while setting out was to beat the old record on 2 lb test. THEN WHY THE HELL WOULD HE GO ALONE!!?? Just doesnt make alot of sense.

I suspect Guiness ins't what he is interested in.  Probably looking for an IGFA record.

Either way its an awesome catch. If he did somehow manage 2lb test he has my respect for that....i respect him for the catch alone though

And they are stricter :)

Give it some time. The real monster is in the mouth of the Chesapeake - somewhere :D.

In the meantime, there's some monsters out there:

92 lbs from Maryland - caught in a net

If there a 100 lb'er out there?

My last striper of 2007 was caught the week before Thanksgiving in a brackish tidal creek while LMB fishing.  Caught it on a craw-colored Bomber Model 4A  that I was skittering along the bottom in about 6 feet of water.  I didn't weigh it but it probably went about 10-12 lbs.

Maybe it was 2lb diameter line...... ::)

with a 2 lb line, you couldn't even lift  from the bottom of the lake/sea even if it was dead.. i don't believe it but it is a monster!

Hey Micro, that photo looks like a fiberglass replica if I've ever seen one. Conveniantly blurred too.

Fish

that people are always so skeptical about big fish on light line ? Are any of you aware of what the "2 lb test Sailfish" record is ? 102 lbs ! IGFA certified, with witnesses !

Having done a lot of micro-light fishing myself, I realize its not near so big a deal as a lot of people believe. All you need a smooth drag, plenty of line, and a manuverable boat.

About that photo...... Granted, it's a lousy one for showing size. Maybe the guy knows a lot about landing big fish on light line, but just doesn't know much about fish photography.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway, I think it's probably true...... and even if it's not, I think I could land a 50 lb Striper on 2 lb test, if I could hook it in the first place.
Peace,
Fish
PS, Granted I was using 2/10 micro-braid, but I only put about as much pressure on this non-stretch thread, as one might put on 6 lb mono.... and I did so on a micro-light rod rated for 1 to 4 lb mono.
Only took 2 hours and 10 minutes. Piece of cake ;-)
71" aprox. 90 lbs...
BTW, I don't use braid instead of mono "only because" it's so much stronger than mono, but more because it is so much nicer to work with... no kinks, no coils, so much more sensitive, etc.
