What qualifies as a big crappie?

Featured Replies

I suppose the answer varies from state to state.  I caught a white crappie yesterday that was 13 inches.  For me, that's a really nice crappie (thought it was a bass at first).  But apparently, it's nothing to write home about.  When does a crappie become big enough to brag about?

Anything over 12in. is a nice crappie to me. Nice job on the 13!

Thank you.

I caught about 10 bass on that outing but that one crappie was the most memorable fish.

For me it's about 12". Just yesterday I saw a picture of a guy with a 19", but can't remember which forum.

2.5 pounds is not uncommon, 3 pounds is a real good fish, 3.5 pounds is a big crappie.  IMO

Same forum, just about 5-6 threads down  ;)

I stumble onto this while looking on google:3-4lbcrappie.jpg

Holy Schneikies!  Now that's a big crappie!!!!

I've got a 2 pounder out of a pond about an hour southeast of you. The biggest one I've seen in central illinois was about 2.5 pounds.

The local lake has a 9" restriction on it so 13" is about normal.

3lb Crappie is something to brag about IMO. There's been bigger caught here, but a 3lb Crappie is a very solid nice fish.
