Record striper caught in RI

Featured Replies

Looks like the state record has been broken and it may have been a world record had they not waited 10 hrs to weigh it.

75.4 lbs, shatters old record by 5+ lbs!!

The fishery has been on a major come back in the last 20 yrs, thanks to the conservation efforts down in the Chesapeake Bay.

When I was a kid, stripers were things our grand parents talked about.  Now, we are loaded with them again.  Life is good :)

Can't wait to see the picture.

I spend more time striper fishing than hunting

green bass. This story is really something.

I'm looking forward to the pics, too!

That things huge!  How do stripers fight compared to other fish.  Sluggish, fast, zigzag?

schoolies are okay but the bigger ones, especially caught deep, don't offer as much as the other species they travel with (i.e. Blues, Bonita, false Albacore)

I've never caught anything near as big as that one but a 30-40 lb fish gives about 5 or 6 good head shakes and then it's a "weight" battle, not a peeling drag battle.

Fish in the 20's seem to be in their prime and offer a bit more but again,...if we are talking "sport" and not "commercial sales", I'd rather catch Bluefish or Tuna, all day long.

Of course,....let's remember, I'm a guy that likes Pickerel and Pike too,lol

I remember many nights fishing with my dad off the pier at the Naval Weapons Station in Yorktown under the lights in the chill.  Soft shell crabs, a short heavy boat rod, Penn reel, 50 lb test mono, and Ted Williams Sheffield Stainless Steel hooks from Sears.   Life was good.

Now its white bucktail jigs, floating live eels and wire lining around the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.   Life is good.

Striper fishing has always been good in the Chesapeake and its tributaries, even in years of low numbers and tight restrictions.   It's an icon fish here in Virginia.  The Virginia Marine Resources Commission is militant about enforcing regulations.  Life will remain good.

LBH, I guess considering the fishing I'vedone and the fish you have listed, it's apples to oranges.  Pretty sure I need to get to the coast someday and fight'em for my self to get a real sense.
