Help deciding what tackle for trout fishing.

Featured Replies

I will be fishing a lake that is seasonally stocked with trout. I was wondering what would be a good bait to buy and try out?

Also where would these trout more than likely propagate too in the lake?

Thanks for any help,

Adam

Unless they're lake trout, most salmonoids spawn in streams.  How big are the trout?

All I use is powerbait.  Roll it in a ball and push it on a small treble hook.  Put some weight about 18" from the hook.

Sit back and try not to fall alseep.

Stocker trout:

Panther Martin; original Floating Rapala, Countdown and X-Rap.

If its a small lake stocked with small trout every year for the public to enjoy then use, powerbait, small worms, minnows under floats around the release area. Small spinners work also. If its a big, deep water lake that the trout live year round and grow up big then thats a different beast, that others could provide more help then me.

I have no idea, I knowed it's stocked twice a year with 920 trout each time.

I haven't fished there before but the website says it's stocked with rainbow trout.

I guess I"ll have to wait and see.

Most stores sell a trout six pack of Panther Martin inline spinners.  PowerBait Trout Dough works, as will small spoons, like Kastmasters, Little Cleos, Phoebes, KO Wobblers.  If the surface temp gets about 55°, the fish will retreat to deeper, cooler water.  Any medium-light power/moderate action spinning rod will work.  6# line should be sufficiant.  I landed this hoss on 4# leader ;)

RW exactly what type of Panthe Martin lures?

The 1/8 and 1/4 oz size:

For some reason the black with chartreuse spots,

gold blade, works best for me.

You can go "cheap" with Rooster Tails but Panther Martins are sturdier and spin better/more reliably.  Personally, I like the Panther Martins which are dressed (have squirrel hair on the treble hook).  I like the gold blades the best but the water/fish will determine that.

Tout (stocked or otherwise) will not propagate unless the conditions are suitable (which is one reason why many ponds are on a put and take out basis).  Is this lake clean and deep enough to sustain cold temperatures in the summer time?  Around here, some of the leftover trout become musky meals before summer rolls around.

Rooster tails are only suitable for burning, a P-M can be run at a bigger variety of speeds.  As far as I've seen, they are both around $3 to $4.

Try "bumble bee" ((005)Black/Yellow) in late summer early fall for shallow browns.  Don't know why, but its deadly.
