Striper Help

Featured Replies

I'm new to the lake mead area..I have been striper fishing a few times here and can do pretty well on cut choves from the shore.I went Tuesday evening and the stripers are starting to get aggressive. My question is,what artificial baits can i use?I have only caught one on a crankbait.I have tried a senko, carolina rig with a fluke, and a grub with a jig head, but nothing seems to catch them. The striper are  around two feet off the bottom in 25'-30' ow.Any suggestions are welcome..

I know it seems funny that I want to change methods from what is working, but i like to use artificials, and i already have enough striper for a couple months.

when stripers are in I use Action Plastics Big Game Shads 4-5 inch with 1oz shad head jig heads. for top water I do really well with white atom poppers. for shad colors I do well with black/white.

What color of jigs and grubs were you using and how big were they?

I would try a white grub probably about 4in with a 1/2-1oz jig head in chartreuse or black.

Another is a swimbait with the same kind of jig head, something that will get down to that depth and allow you to slow roll it, to entice the strike.

Basically anything imitating shad would be a good choice to start with.

I fish for stripers from my boat on Lake Pleasant north of Phoenix. Artificials that work for me are;

Storm Wild-Eye Swim Shad in shad color.

Husky Cisco Kid crank bait.

Crocodile spoon in blue and silver color.

Happy fishing.

Mike to answer your question I was useing 4'' Grubs. I guess i wasn't Useing a heavy enough weight. But I find when throwing chunk bait, sometimes they like it to slow fall.

bass or bass-

I bought some of those shads a couple day's ago, but didn't get bit on it yesterday.I would cast it as far as I could, Hand out line to go to the bottom, and reel in really slow with a little jerk changes.Anyways maybe they are not yet that aggressive.I have not seen any boils yet.

Here's picks from yesterday's action. All caught on chunk choves.

I guess I should defend myself cause I got slammed for not practicing catch and release, in the post in outings.

Lake Mead is trying to thin out the striper. It is unlimited striper under 20'' and twenty over 20''. Striper are taking over the lake and they are trying to thin them out.Yes I practice catch and release with LM and SM bass..

Why didn't you get in contact with me earlier?  I was at Lake Mead the first week of this month with my boat.  I didn't catch too many, but they were very good eating.  I will probably head down again sometime, will have to get in touch and fish together next time.
