Sauger and Striper??

Featured Replies

Sometimes i fish for sauger and hybrid stripers below the dams in kentucky.. you guys that have fished for these fish before what are your best producing baits??

thanks.

for stripers I like using swimbaits. I don't have to much experience with sauger, my guess would be to try baits you would use for walleye.

I would use a 3-4 inch white grub or swimbait and you will be able to catch booth species.  That or a gold Hopkins spoon.

Totally different rigs and locations:

Striper: gizzard shad, threadfin (yellowtail) and

skipjack. Fish these on a 3-way swivel and a 3 oz.

weight, bumping bottom in and just below the boils.

Sauger: 3/4-1 oz green suager jig tipped with

a small minnow. Fish the outside of the current,

on structure near the dam. Otherwise, you have

to find the schools in the river and stay on them.

Note: Unlike any other fishing I know of, sauger

fishermen fish together. If you see boats huddled

up, join them!

Generally, striper season is spring through fall.

Sauger school to breed in the winter, mid December

through February.

I've had good success on Stripers/Hybrids (Wiper) in tailraces using a soft plastic 6" Reaper from http://www.cachecustomlures.com/CCL%20pages/reaper.htm in the clear silver, silver shad or silver hologram colors on a 3/4 oz. arrowhead jig ( I pour the jigheads myself).

I don't have much experience with sauger. I'll have to learn I guess, since one of the local lakes has been stocked with saugeye (hybrid of a sauger and a walleye). Like RW said, minnow-tipped jigs would be a good place to start.

I caught 2 sauger this year on shallow diving crawdad pattern crankbaits, fishing for smallies.
