My brother recently sent me a survey on tournament bass fishing and asked me to complete it. He is a PhD student at Tenn. Tech Univ. and has degrees in Fisheries Science and Biology. He is doing a research study on competitive bass fishing and how it affects fish mortality and what the angler's response is to that mortality. From my understanding, a lot of information on fish mortality in competitive fishing is negative and comes from environmental activist groups seeking to end tournaments. I think the research study is an effort to clear the muddy water and get the opinion of anglers as a counterpoint to the argument.

Just completed it bud.  My dad and I don't fish tournaments, but many times we head out on the Occoquan and Potomac rivers on the same days the tourneys are held just to see how we do in comparison to the tourney anglers.  I have a lot of experience on the water with many of the boaters that launch out of there, tourney guys or not.  So I believe my input should be just as important as we are indirectly associated or part of the concept as a whole.  There are questions in the survey that include recreational anglers as well so it's fitting.

Anyway, great survey, some very interesting questions.  You will definately have to let us know what kind of findings or report he puts together for this.  It would be interesting to see if it has any impact whatsoever, even if it is just in the region he's a part of.  Later man.

Ask your brother to take a look at the livewell additives that are used to keep fish alive. This should be a factor in his study as well because many of us us them. If he needs to be pointed in the right direction just have him contact me.

He did a study on livewell additives several years ago while attending Mississippi St.  If I remember correctly, the additives they researched had a small effect on the recovery/longevity of bass in livewells.  I think adding ice to livewells at intervals actually had a more pronounced effect.  I will have to get some of the results from that study and post it on the boards.

Additives do help in general because it promotes the secretion of the slime coat which protects the fish from bacterial infection and makes it less likely to get any abrasions or injuries during handling at the weigh-in.  Cooler water temperature slows down metabolism during the warm summers, holds more oxygen, and is probably the main thing to be concerned with.  A good rule of thumb is to fill your livewell with cool water first thing in the morning before the water warms.

Hope it took.  Lost my internet connection right after I pressed Done.  I Put some notes in where allowed.  I was a club tourney director for around 7 years and kept statistics on tournament bass mortality.  Ours was less than 1.5%.  I've found over the years mortality occurred mostly when a malfunctioning livewell was involved.
