What ever happen to helping kids.

Featured Replies

OK this is just a rant/issue that I have notice and I wanted to bring it to light.

We always talk about how we need to get the younger people more involved in fishing. So why is it that we like to chase them away by making fun of them or ranting about them.

I know that some kids post stupid things about getting sponsors and resumes, but why do you think they do that? They just don't know how it works.

I can remember when I posted my first question here. I asked how I could get sponsors. Of course there was the usual few guys making fun of me.But there was also guys who told me about what I had done wrong and what I needed to do if I wanted sponsors one day.

It was those guys that made me want to learn more about the industry and educate myself by asking more questions and reading more about it.

The point I'm trying to make is that I think we need to lay off the rants and teasing and focus in on the helping.

90% of the posts and threads on here are great and the reason a lot of young guys like me have progressed in our understanding about sponsors and life as a whole. But its that 10% of ranting and teasing that could scare off kids who were once really interested in bass fishing.

I know that some of these kids think their big shots and won't even take good advice. In that case teasing them is not going to help, let them stick their hands in the fire and learn for themselves.

In my opinion if a young kid likes fishing enough that he joins BassResource.com so he can learn. That's the type of kid who we want to keep around because he will become a dedicated fisherman for life.

I know they sound stupid and its funny, but lets help them and not make fun of them.

We got it right 90% of the time, lets tack on that last 10% and help grow this sport.

I think everyone gets jacked about "kids" trying to get sponsored because 1. They need to search the forum, these questions occur alot. And 2. It seems this generation carries alot of "dead weight". A lot of people my age haven't worked a day in their lives and get everything handed to them. They expect it all for nothing.

I'm all for helping n00bs too, but some just can't take it anymore ;)

Nates right im 17 and a bunch of kids my age expect everything to be given to them. I know that you cant do or get anything done unless you show the passion and do the work yourself. Im no tournament fisherman yet but hoping to get there but i know its going to be a long road coming.

See this is the kind of kids that get the help around here. Not the ones that come on here begging for sponsers. I'm only 23 so I'm not too far ahead of you ;)

Us Tennessee boys know how to get work done :);)

But to get back on the thread. I'm on a prostaff of a rod company, and I'm President of my bass club in town. Trying to get one started at my highschool. Some of us teenagers know how to work. Granted I wouldn't be have the pro staff position I have. I love fishing and I never want to see it go away. Sometimes all teenagers are looking for is a little encouragement from older people. So we know that they care, and want to help.

Thats great im joining my first bass club pretty soon.

Its like taking steroids for your fishing abilities..You learn a TON!

I thank you so much for posting this. I posted something similar about the same topic and I got laughed at because I said these middle age guys making fun of us kids for trying to get into the industry are scaring the kids away from trying to get sponsors. I respect you so much. And whats up Basspro? Hahaha youtube! :D

If you are the age you've listed on your profile (24) , you're really not a kid. I smell a rat.
