Looky what I caught:

Little_smallie_on_a_egg_sack.jpg

I had no idea Smallies would take trout egg sacks.

I was actually fishing for steelhead :-[

But the creek I was at has a ton of little smallmouth bass (but nothing really over 6").

Anyone else ever caught smallie on an egg sack?

Thanks,

Claude

I'm almost positive that isn't a smallie, it looks like a rock bass.

It might be, that is the other thing in there, besides the steelhead.

Definately, definately a Rock Bass...definately. :D

I am not horribly surprised you caught it. Most bass species will eat almost anything they can fit in their mouth...and sometimes some things they can't.

The very best way to identify a rock bass is to be alert as to what happens after the hookset.......the fish will fight for exactly TWO seconds, then float to the top to be reeled in like a body surfer, skimming across the water like a champ.

If that happens, its a rock bass for sure!

They also smack bluegill poppers with a vengeance, then you reel'em in across the surface like little freebies ;D
