Found this part of the forum so I thought I'd post my one and only tournament trip!

I entered a wildcat tournament with my wife's uncle, an FLW/BFL fisherman on Smith Lake in June of 06. It was a night tournament and we and 35 other boats hit out at around dark. We headed from Smith Dam all the way across the lake to near Double Springs, AL and fished a point that ends in about 35 feet of water with brush on it. We caught 2 keepers (Smith had a slot limit of under 13 and over 15 if I recall) quick then continued to work the point.

It was a very narrow point so we pretty much casted to the bank and retreived in the same spot. After about an hour their I was ready to go, but my partner said you can usually get one more good bite 30 minutes after dark so we stayed.

Sure enough 30 minutes later I snagged on what I thought was a broken brush top since it came with me, but then it started swimming sideways. I set the hook on a 5.35 largemouth! With 3 of our 5 fish in the boat we started working boat docks in creeks on our way back to the dam. We caugth one more keeper but still no #5.

With 20 minutes to get back to the dam around 11:30 and still 30 minutes out we were scrambling for a last fish. The 5 pounder I caught would put us close to the top but wouldn't win it so we fished a 10ft square island in the middle of the lake for about 5 minutes when I hooked into what I thought was a crappie! It turned out to be a 10 inch largemouth weighing in at maybe a pound! We had our 5 fish so we FLEW back to the dam.

We got to the dam with 5 minutes to spare!

I weighed in my big fish and missed the 150 bucks for big fish by one spot. The winner's bass was 5.45lb to my 5.35!

When all was said and done we won the tourney with 11.52 lbs of bass. The real kicker was that second place came in with 11.51 lbs!!! We won by 2 1/100s of a lb!

Moral of the story: Sometimes an ant can make or break you!

I haven't fished a tournament since then, and I'm not sure I want to lose my title as the only bass fisherman to never lose a tournament!

Sadly no on the pics. I did however look on google images for a 5.35 lb bass and what popped up looked just like it. It was a lot of fun when I pulled it out of the bag and heard the oos and ahs. My wife's uncle kept getting asked who the new guy was and he told em that I was a lawyer from Gadsden! (Technically I'm a law student) Some guys got a little ticked.
