6/03/07--Three Chatterbait Bass

Featured Replies

Been catching a few dinks the last 2 or 3 farm pond trips but nothing decent.  Rained yesterday for the first time in weeks if not months; just a 1/2" but it was welcome.

Before putting the Basshunter in, I threw a few times from the bank of the dam of the bigger pond.  A 4 lber grabbed the CB right in front of me.  8 different baits later while motoring around in the boat netted me zero.

Headed for the walk-around pond and as usual, started throwing from the dam.  Saw some Bass activity in the shallow, western corner and standing back on the dam, hopefully out of sight of any fish, I threw the CB again.  A 6 lber grabbed it in 1' of water.  Had a dink hit it after that but no hookup.

Went back to the center of the dam and threw several baits with no bites.  Saw some more movement in that same corner and when I threw the CB again, a 5 lber sucked it in.

Quit early after that as "biting" flies were getting too thick and too hungry.

Same 4 lber

Same 6 lber

Nice pile of fish Dan!

lightninrod, how are you fishing the chatterbait?? I was on the Potomac River yesterday and saw a guy killin 'em on chatterbaits. I just picked up a white/chartreus boogee bait today. Can you help me out on how to fish them?

When in my boat, I throw the CB as far as I can, count it down on a free-fall to what ever depth I think the Bass are at, rip it upward, pause, then repeat. Many times, the bite is on the free-fall.

From the bank, I throw it out, let it fall just a foot or two and then retrieve it straight and slow. If I'm throwing it into shallow water(as I was with the 5 and the 6 lber) then I start retrieving it as soon as it hit's the water. Those two just grabbed it as they swept in from nearby .

They aren't the "perfect" lure as there isn't one but they do work.....sometimes. Btw, forgot to say it was windy but not in the shallows

I'll admit I still don't own a chatter bait but I sure be eyeballing lately and I think I been sold  ;)

Outstanding.

I was in a slump with chatterbaits, but it was my May challenge.

I hit it big with the swimsenko as a trailer.

Now your results confirm it.   The swim senko may be the ideal CB trailer.

Nice way to "git er done" son
