Swimbaits for Smallies

Featured Replies

Are any of you guys using swimbaits for smallmouth? If so what kinds are you using. I recently saw a TV show where KVD was catching smallmouth of all sizes on strike king king shads.

I caught a nice one at Pickwick last Saturday on a GYCB Swimming Senko, blue pearl with silver flakes (031). The bait was T-rigged with a 1/4 oz bullet weight and a 5/0 Gamakatsu Offset Round Bend hook.

I haven't been using swimbaits for a very long time but the short time I've been doing it this is what I've found.Mattlures soft baits are all good for smallies. I've caught the most off baby bass in smallmouth but thats probably cause I've used the most crappie, gill, perch and walleye have all produced. Hudd shad catch em too. I plan to get some 6 inch hudds and try them I bet they work. Next time I'm at a good smallie spot I'm going to throw my 3:16 baby wake and see what happens.

RW - How are you fishing the swim senko?

Steady retrieve on/in or near structure and cover. The smallmouth I caught Saturday was suspending next to a sunken tree in 15' of water. More generally, I prefer submerged grass.

a 5/0 Gamakatsu Offset Round Bend hook.

A little off-topic, but a big thumbs up on these hooks (and the similar ones from Owner), not only for the swim senkos, but worms in general.
