RECENTLY I WAS FISHING A SMALL LAKE IN SOUTHERN WV. I WAS PITCHING A BLACK/BLUE EAKINS JIG W/A YAMAMOTO FLAPPIN HOG TRAILER ON SOME LAYDAY DOWNS. I SET THE HOOK ON A FISH AND GOT HERE IN. TO MY DISGUST THE FISH HAD A QUARTER SIZE HOLE RIGHT IN HERE STOMACH . I MEAN GUTS WERE HANGING OUT. I GUESS WHEN I SET THE HOOK I DROVE HER INTO A BRANCH UNDER THE WATER. SHE SWAM OFF BUT I KNOW SHE IS GONNA DIE. MY QUESTION IS HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THIS BEFORE AND WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF THE FISH LIVING?

Ive never had that happen but Ive had catfish and perch get gut hooked and do something similar.

Thats pretty odd.  I have never had that happen to me for sure.  Just one of those things you don't think about until it happens.  I hate killing fish...it really bothers me.

OW.. Were the wounds recent looking?? If not, it may have just been another fish got ahold of your bass. That'd make me feel better to know that I hadn't killed the fish... still would suck though.

IT WAS DEFINATLEY FROM THE FIGHT OR HOOKSET. IVE SEEN BITE MARKS FROM MUSKIES AND TURTLES AND EVEN BIRDS BUT THIS WAS TOTALLY DIFFRENT.

IT LOOKED LIKE SOMEBODY SHOT IT WITH A 9 MM. I DONT KNOW IF THE HOLE ITSELF WOULD KILL THE FISH OR THE INFECTION.

P.S  Take off the CAPS LOCk.....

do they have bow fishin in your area? it will take alot of force to ram a stick in the side of a bass.

I caught a trout with a hole through his "shoulders"(behind the head) from a heron, and he was doing fine, so you never know!!!! You might just get him again!!

I was in the boat with A.J. when he stuck this fish.  We were both scratching our heads about the hole until he said it was impaled on a stick.  No wonder with the hookset this guy uses.  If it would have been a small fish, it would have been flying back at the boat.
