my first tourney

Featured Replies

Fished in my first organized tournament, not a lot to talk about drove up to Lagrange, GA.  Fished West Point lake a beautiful lake all the sweet gum trees were red and yellow.  Caught three nice size spots on a finesse worm (Watermelon seed).  fished that d**n Carolina rig all weekend (my first time) didn't do to well.  I actually did catch a sunfish on it, who would have thought, but had a great time, looking forward to next month as we head to lake Oconee.

But didn't it feel special? I love the competitive environment of a tourney. Get me on a lake on a casual day without figuring out a pattern in a few hours and I am thinking about my wife and kids at home. Sign me up for a tourney and I am prefishing 12-13 hours straight the 3-day weekend in advance and not sleeping the night before the tourney. The longest stretches I have gone in my marriage without talking to my wife was during tournaments! LOL! Just keep chunkin' it Bro'.

Thanks for the reply partner, we fished 9 hours both days and I loved every second of it, got to ride in a $35,000 boat, and came closer to God than I ever thought possible, there is just something tranquil about throwing a crank bait early in the morning when the sun is just barely peeking over the horizon, you can just barely see the water from all the fog rolling off the lake.  I can't think of any other place I would rather be.

I'm glad that you had a good time.  Whenever I fish a tourny, I try to fish my strengths and not try too many new things.  I save that to days when I'm not in a tourney.

I have a tourney on Sunday.  I'll have a good time regardless, but I hope I catch my limit.

Good to hear you had a good time. I love fishing, and being competitive, so putting the two together is just a hay day for me!

I've got a tournament tomorrow and if I place top 10 then I will have earned a spot on Auburns Traveling team for the Southern Collegiate Series. If not, I've got once more chance on Dec. 6th to do it, thats our last tournament of the fall.

Relating to what 618 wrote, I only fish what I have confidence in as well during tourneys. Another thing I learned from a pro on fishing from the back of the boat is to fish different from the guy in the front. Throw a different style and/or different lure than the guy in the front. His point was that he can guarantee my lack of success as he has hit every potential spot with that lure before i get the chance. Ex. If he is throwing a spinner bait, maybe I am throwing a shallow running crankbait; he is c-rigin, I am throwing a jig. It really helped me have more success in tourneys before I got my own boat. Good luck on your next one and let us know how you do!
