Went out yesterday evening to throw a few baits i have just recieved. I was throwing some custom cranks from Marty(BigM), which looked and felt awesome. A few hard swimbaits. which i was prettty happy with. Last but not least was a Mattlures 4.5 soft swimbait, gizzard shad.First cast,"yeh, this looks pretty good" second cast," weighes a little more than i thought." third cast, im reeling in and about 10 feet from bank i see the swimbait disappear into about 40 plus inches of hell.The musky rolled 1 time and turned downstream and that was it. I guess the musky thought that Matt makes a good bait too.

That is the Exact reason I am apprehensive about throwing them in my waters. We have some absolute monsters. $40 or $50 is a lot of coin to be throwing into a Muskies yap. :'(

Shh...don't let the Musky guys know.  I'll happily let them throw their 13" Grandmas and Double Cowgirls until their arms fall off.

That teaches you to thicken up your leader and put some hefty PowerPro on.

I caught a big pike at my local hole last fall. This winter I bought some wire leaders to use with my new swimbaits just in case.

Hooked_On_Bass he was using a shad they are only about $6 each. still not cheap enough to just get swallowed by a musky but not that bad. I would probably recomend a leader next time.  

Wire leader for sure, but I wouldn't purchase one.  The snaps on packaged leaders are not very good.  The wire itself is fine just replace the snap with a quality one or twist on 6-12" of piano wire.

Sorry to hear that.  I have lost a few soft plastics to Muskies but I have never lost anything expensive.  How awesome would that have been if you landed it???

This was funny when I read this because he (pitchinkid) and I were talking on the phone and he was joking about a muskie eating that swimbait.  I have lost a few even on braided line, those critters have some very large teeth...think freshwater shark.

They really do...Some of the ones in the tackle shops here around Cave Run are monsters.  I think I would scream like a little girl if I ever hooked into one.  

Muskie teeth are more like barracuda teeth, not serated as most sharks, btw a bull shark can be found in freshwater.

Muskie, pike, cuda , mackeral, can bite thru braid like it's butter.

;DI had no intention whatsoever to hook a musky. I would have had a leader or something on, but i really didn't think about. I have seen 4 muskies hooked there in the past 2 years so i probably knew better but didn't really think to much about it. Anyways the 5 seconds he was hooked was a blast. yeah I'm so glad i didn't take the tru-tungsten down there.

Yeah, I realize that he was using a shad. I was actually referring to hard swimbaits which are normally in the $40-$50 range and higher. But, no $6.00 isn't SO bad, but still sucks. I have lost many spinnerbaits to these toothy critters. ;D

I know I caught several out of Cave Run. I always catch a muskie when I fish a tournament on cave run.

Those darn Muskies. I caught a good 35" on a popper last June on the Allegheny River.

Man do they put up a fight.

sorry you didn't get it in but i always worry when i hook one how i'm going to get it off the hook, i hooked one at cave run but lost it.
