what kind of jig

Featured Replies

I've rarely ever used a jig, but I really want to learn them next year. What jig (and trailer) would you guys recommend for shallow wood, docks, grass, basically an all-around jig for tidal potomac river type water? There are so many different kinds out there i don't know which to choose

Triple rattle back watermelon orange or blue black.  for a trailer a swiminn chunk works well

not everybody's cup of tea but, the terminator pro model has a slotted head instead of the more typical looped guide...comes thru grass very well.

as far as trailers, my best producers have always been the super chunk or super chunk, jrs.

oh yeah...black/blue.

i have only been using jewel bait company eakins jig for over a year now.  i have caught a bunch of fish on them.  missouri craw is my best color with a watermelon craw colored net bait paca chunk

I like to use a Buckeye Mop jig (square living rubber) for 95% of my jig fishing. Brown or Green Pumpkin and a Super Chunk in Green Pumpkin. Great in grass and around rocks. IMO one of the best all around jigs made.

Eakins jigs are what I use. Stay basic in colors watermelon, green gourd, and green gourd with 3 or4 strands of orange for dirty water. I fish a lot of shallow ponds so i stay with 5/16 oz for the most part. I use  bigger and/or brighter jigs when the situation calls for it.

Be aware that I fish small lakes/ponds from the bank, 99% of my fishing is this. The water levels are pretty much 1-5feet in majority of areas. That being said, my most productive jigs are:

1. 5/16 Booyah Baby Boo Jig (colors: black/blue for overcast/night/muddy water, and greenpumpkin, watermelon red, or peanutbutter and jelly for every other condition.

2. 5/16 Eakins Jig

Theres two type of trailers I use, first would be high action trailers, these are for when the fish are aggressive, or when im looking for a reaction strike, and these are the trailers I use majority of the time. Second would be "less action" trailers, these trailers I use when the fish are just looking for a bait that barely moves, primarily when the water is very cold. But like I said, other then when the water is cold, im using a high action trailer.

Some good high action trailers are: Paca Chunks, Ragetail Chunks.

Some good less action trailers are: Yum Chunks, Zoom Super Chunks.

ps. Remember to match the color of the trailer, to the color of the jig.

for an all around profile I like an angular head.  Something bullet styled or comes to a little bit of a point.  For me they fish good in all types of structure and really good in grass.
