Noobie question: How to use JIGS?

Featured Replies

Ugh, I know its a odd question but, how do I use it? I've only caught 1 fish on a jig n pig and that was all luck because it was on the fall as soon as it hit the water. I've never really read or tried a technique or rhythm to fish these baits.

Any advice and comments are strongly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm no expert, but I fish jigs very similar to the way I fish a Texas rigged worm. Cast your jig near an ambush point like a brush pile or lay-down log and give it some a little slack so it will fall vertically (but remember, many bites will come on the fall so watch your line closely). While retrieving the jig, mix it up by hopping, dragging, shaking and pausing the bait. Remember, fishing the jig slower with longer pauses will usually result in more fish. Try to put jig where the fish are, don't be afraid to throw it in heavy cover if you have the right equipment.

Good Luck.

Have you read the bass fishing articles on the home page , there are some very good articles on fishing with a jig.

Look under techniques.

Thanks alot Jake, that's what I thought on how you would really use it, haven't really tried that but just hopping it a few times. Haven't really caught anything with that but I'll try your technique.

I think the best advice I have ever been given is to observe what it is that you are trying to mimic.  A jig is a crawdad imitator, so what you are trying to do is make your jig look and act like a craw.  I try to vary my return to make it more realistic.

As you probably already know, bass love to strike out of reaction.  Watch how a craw escapes from prey.  They swim backward at a fast rate and not at a constant cadance.  It is kind of like "jerk-jerk-jerk-pause-jerk."  And then the bite usually happens when I stop, either on the fall or once it hits bottom.

Sometimes I just craw it along the bottom, other times I twitch it once and let it sit a few seconds.  It all depends on how active the fish are and how they are reacting on that particular day.  And water temp is another factor.  Remember, the crawdad is in the water too and they will act accordingly (more active some days more lethargic on others).

I hope this is all making sense?  Jigs are awesome it the right situation.  I hope you have fun learning.

thank you MDbassinmike but too bad the water here in Michigan is frozen over now, I'll have to wait til spring to try that technique

I remember someone posting a vid in a post like this. The video was great, really explained jigs well. The video was of a man who in the beginning compared a camera to a jig.

So to the guy who posted that vid, post it again in here, I think it'll really do this guy some good.

The best thing you can do is to watch a video of a fleeing crawdad and try to imitate that.

Same goes for any lure.  For example, crankbaits.  Watch a video of a fleeing or injured baitfish.

Frogs/poppers/surface lures:  Watch top-feeding baitfish, or a swimming frog.

But then again, there are things like creature baits that really don't imitate anything (maybe ALIENS  ::D), but those generally are fished to imitate baitfish or gigantic water insects rummaging on the bottom for algae.

What's really hard to pinpoint are wacky-rigged worms.... well, i guess they imitate injured baitfish struggling to swim????

Where do you find video's such as the listed above? I know BPS has instructional videos but for research where might one find videos like that?

Well, your gonna have to get lucky for the guy who posted the vid I am referring to, to find your post, and submit the video.

So....if I were you, I'd make a post asking for videos on jig fishing. I think your chances of getting the video will go up a real lot.
